8vo. First UK edition, first impression. First published in Italy in 1982. Original red cloth, silvergilt. Jacket by Slatter-Anderson. The head of the spine is slightly bumped. Signed in black ink on the title page by Primo Levi. Paper browned as usual due to cheap stock. Unclipped d/w also slightly bruised towards the head of the spine. Near fine in near fine d/w. 'Based on a true story, If Not Now, When? chronicles the adventures, crises and inner transformations of a band of Jewish partisans - Russian and Polish refugees from Nazi terror - as, stranded in occupied territory, they offer what resistance they can to the German army.' The book was inspired by a group of Zionists he met when they hitched a ride on the train returning him to Italy after liberation from Auschwitz. Signed copies of the English edition of Primo Levi's novel are very uncommon. He died in 1987.

First edition in English of Levi's novel based on a true story. Octavo, original half cloth. Boldly signed by Primo Levi on the title page. Fine in a near fine dust jacket. Jacket design by Carin Goldberg. Translated from the Italian by William Weaver. Introduction by Irving Howe. First published in 1982 in Italian, "If Not Now, When" follows a courageous band of Jewish partisans making their way from Russia to Italy, moving toward the ultimate goal of Palestine. The novel captures the landscape and the people of Eastern Europe in vivid detail, depicting as well the terrible bleakness of war-ridden Europe. The title is taken from a well-known rabbinical saying attributed to Hillel the Elder: "If I am not for myself, who will be for me? And when I am for myself, what am 'I'? And if not now, when?".

"I immersed myself in The Periodic Table gladly and gratefully. There is nothing superfluous here, everything this book contains is essential. It is wonderful pure, and beautifully translatedI was deeply impressed" (Saul Bellow). "Brilliant, grave and oddly sunny; certainly a masterpiece" (Los Angeles Times).
