Magazine / Periodical
Soft Cover with Spiral Binding. Condition: Good. No Jacket. In Hebrew, vowelzed. 16 leaves: Title page, columns 67 to 96. Pagination continues from earlier issues. 274 x 216 mm. Two closed tears with no loss of text or paper. Was originally bound with a staple that rusted off after more than a century. Israel Benjamin ben Moshe Levner (1862-1916) was a Hebrew writer who edited and published Haprachim (Ha-Perahim), iton shavu'I LiYeladim, an illustrated weekly children's newspaper. He was born in Trudolyubovka, a Jewish colony in the Russian province of Yekaterinoslav, in the south of Russia. Levner studied at the Zlatool Yeshiva and later also pursued secular studies. He traveled to Siberia, founded a Hebrew school in Takaman, taught in Yikaterinoslav in 1885, published in Hamelitz articles dealing with education and with the Jewish life in the communities he had visited between 1883 and 1885. His stories, first published in 1895, attracted wide attention. Ben-Avigdor invited him to join the Tushiyyah publishing house, where he edited a series of storybooks for children, especially Bibliotekah li-Yladim, the first, and very popular, proper readers for Hebrew-reading children. His major work, Kol Aggadot Yisrael, which has retained its popularity to the present day, contains the legends of the Talmud, written in biblical style and arranged in chronological order. First published in 1895, the book has had a great many editions in Erez Israel and abroad, and has been translated into various languages. In 1905-1906 he edited the illustrated children's weekly Hakhayim vehateva that was published along with the daily Hazman. In this weekly appeared the most prominent Hebrew poets and writers of the period. When it ceased publication he left Vilnius and moved to Lugansk, Ukraine, where the Russian authorities appointed him as the Rabbi of Lugnask, he wrote for and edited Haprachim, whose publisher he was as well, from 1907 to 1914 when it ceased publication shortly before WW I broke out. His works have earned an important place in Hebrew literature for children. Together with Judah Steinberg, one of the major contributors to Ha-Perahim, he published the first of two volumes of Kereistomatyah ("Chrestomathy," 1908). Among other works by Levner are a version of the Shulhan Arukh (1906) and an edition of Ein Ya'akov (1909), both for youth. Levner wrote, edited and translated various works, mostly for children.
