Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Lewis Carroll's timeless classic, introduced by Chris Riddell. You never know where you'll find yourself in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland! Join Alice on her weird and wonderful journey, where nothing is quite as it seems. When Alice steps through the looking-glass, she enters a very strange world of chess pieces and nursery rhyme characters such as Humpty Dumpty, Tweedledum and Tweedledee and the angry Red Queen. Nothing is what it seems and, in fact, through the looking-glass, everything is distorted. Lewis Carroll, born Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (1832-98), grew up in Cheshire in the village of Daresbury, the son of a parish priest. He was a brilliant mathematician, a skilled photographer and a meticulous letter and diary writer. Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, inspired by Alice Liddell, the daughter of the Dean of Christ Church in Oxford, was published in 1865, followed by Through the Looking-Glass in 1871. He wrote numerous stories and poems for children including the nonsense poem The Hunting of the Snark and fairy stories Sylvie and Bruno. The book includes a behind-the-scenes journey, including an author profile, a guide to who's who, activities and more. Also available in Puffin Classics: Alice's Adventures Through the Looking Glass. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

ABOUT THE BOOK: This 1872 sequel to Lewis Carroll's beloved Alice's Adventures in Wonderland finds the inquisitive heroine in a fantastic land where everything is reversed. Looking-glass land, a topsy-turvy world lurking just behind the mirror over Alice's mantel, is a fantastic realm of live chessmen, madcap kings and queens, strange mythological creatures, talking flowers and puddings, and rude insects. Brooks and hedges divide the lush greenery of looking-glass land into a chessboard, where Alice becomes a pawn in a bizarre game of chess involving Humpty Dumpty, Tweedledum and Tweedledee, the Lion and the Unicorn, the White Knight, and other nursery-rhyme figures. Promised a crown when she reaches the eighth square, Alice perseveres through a surreal landscape of amusing characters that pelt her with riddles and humorous semantic quibbles and regale her with memorable poetry, including the oft-quoted "Jabberwocky." This TOP-OF-THE-LINE edition of Through the Looking Glass and What Alice Found There, features the original John Tenniel illustrations, makes it an heirloom edition you can pass down from generation to generation. First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Near fine. First Edition. Octavo, 4 volumes. "Through the Looking-Glass" is the stated "tenth thousand," but the other volumes are first printings. A handsome set, uniformly bound by Riviere and Son in full rich blue polished calf, with all edges gilt, tilt edges and borders, elaborate spine compartments, reddish-brown morocco spine labels, marbled andpapers, and the original cloth bound in at rear in all four volumes. A very near fine set, with the spines gently and evenly faded to lighter blue, but with gilt still vibrant. A few leaves trivially bumped at the bottom edge of "Through the Looking-Glass;" entirely forgiveable. A most pleasing set.
