The paper is Pescia, a mould-made sheet fro…m the Magnani mill in Italy. The binding, done in-house, is hand-sewn, in full gray cloth printed by letterpress with a design that is an enlarged reference to elements in the artist's drawings, and titled on the front, back, and spine. The volume is enclosed in a darker gray cloth slipcase that features the same front and spine titling as on the book. The volume is signed by both the poet and the artist. This was the first of two volumes of Heaney's poetry published by Arion Press (the second being "Stone From Delphi", 2012). Seamus Heaney (1939-2013) was lecturing at the University of California, Berkeley in 1999. Through Helen Vendler we invited him to come to San Francisco to visit Arion Press and have lunch with us on South Park. On February 9, he arrived bearing a present, a copy of the manuscript of a translation he had just made of a Pushkin poem about the legendary poet Arion, who, in Ovid's "Metamorphoses", is saved from the sea by a dolphin. We printed the poem as a keepsake for Arion subscribers in 2002. Hoyem proposed to Heaney that Arion Press publish a deluxe limited edition of his forthcoming translation of "Beowulf" with facing Old English. His publishers, Faber & Faber and Farrar, Straus & Giroux, had intended to use only the translation. Heaney took the idea back to his publishers and they agreed to add the Old English text, which obviated the rationale for the limited edition. Vendler prevailed upon Heaney to allow us to instead produce a limited edition of his most important series of poems, "Squarings". Hoyem approached Sol LeWitt (1928-2007) to do four prints for the four sections of twelve poems each. Instead, the artist offered to do forty-eight drawings, one for each of the poems, as squares with underlying patterns and overlying scribbles. Jorge Francisco Isidoro Luis Borges Acevedo (1899 1986) was an Argentine short-story writer, essayist, poet and translator regarded as a key figure in Spanish-language and international literature. His best-known works, Ficciones and El Aleph, published in the 1940s, are collections of short stories exploring motifs such as dreams, labyrinths, chance, infinity, archives, mirrors, fictional writers and mythology. Borges's works have contributed to philosophical literature and the fantasy genre, and have had a major influence on the magic realist movement in 20th century Latin American literature. Solomon "Sol" LeWitt (1928 2007) was an American artist linked to various movements, including conceptual art and minimalism. LeWitt came to fame in the late 1960s with his wall drawings and "structures" (a term he preferred to "sculptures") but was prolific in a wide range of media including drawing, printmaking, photography, painting, installation, and artist's books. He has been the subject of hundreds of solo exhibitions in museums and galleries around the world since 1965. The first biography of the artist, Sol LeWitt: A Life of Ideas, by Lary Bloom, was published by Wesleyan University Press in the spring of 2019. Twenty two silk screens by Sol LeWitt. Edition limited to 1500 numbered copies. Each book signed by Sol LeWitt. Sol LeWitt created twenty two drawings which he calls a counterpoint to the text. He also designed the actual volume itself, from choosing the typeface to determining the size of the pages. Months were spent casting and composing the type. Lewitt conceptually explores: "Circle, Square, Triangle, Rectangle, T…rapezoid and Parallelogram in Red, Yellow and Blue on Red, Yellow and Blue." The book is divided into three sections, each of which differ by background color. Barbara M. Reise wrote that "LeWitt's colours, like his lines and squares, are like 'facts': they are inert, pre-established, accepted and un-emotional man-made constructs which can 'come to life' within a present context but do not necessarily do so. Red, yellow, blue, and black (and the white of wall or paper) are standard "absolute primaries basic to all pigment colour that is according to the colour system accepted by an art academic from early 19th-century theorists like Chevreul. Unlike the Newtonian rainbow-spectrum based on light-waves, this theoretical structure is more conceptually mathematical and tautological than referential to some exterior and inhuman Nature. LeWitt's use of these colours is as flatly complete, physical, and self-reflective as the theory itself. Unlike Seurat, whose use of the same colour theories was subordinated and interrelated to other interests in proportion theories and (seen) scene subject-matter, LeWitt uses colour as both the subject and the object of his art" (in: 'Sol Lewitt Critical Texts,' ed. Provenance collection Guy Schraenen. from the Portikus website: With its opening exhibition in October, 1987, showing "Publiziertes und Unpubliziertes" ("Published and Unpublished Works") by Dieter Roth, Portikus began its exhibition series presenting parallel to the Frankfurt book fair an artist, who is especially committed to the book as an autonomous medium of artistic work. After Ilya Kabakov - 10 Albums - in 1988 and Lawrence Wiener last year, Portikus now presents the book projects of Sol Lewitt. Sol Lewitt belongs, as does Lawrence Wiener, to the most important representatives of American conceptual art, a term Lewitt introduced into the debate in his Paragraphs and Sentences on Conceptual Art. His pictorial concept is based on the formal language developed concurrently by minimal art. In various media, Lewitt elaborated its reduced vocabulary based on elementary geometric and stereometric forms to serial structures. The presentation of the concept is in the foreground, while its physical realisation is secondary. "The idea itself, even if not turned into a visible form, is also a work of art just like any completed product. All stages in between - initial scribbles, sketches, drawings, unsuccessful works, models, studies, thoughts, conversations - are of interest. Those showing the artist's process of thought are often more interesting than the final result." (Paragraphs, 1966) This means that the formal and material aesthetics of the work steps back in favour of the concept, without, however, being excluded. This becomes especially evident in the coloured wall drawings; their visible sensuousness only seemingly contradicts the stringent conceptuality. The individual work is not directed towards rational relationships in regard to its visible qualities or its conceptual structure; rather, Lewitt is concerned with thematising such a relationship as simply antithetic. The logical, systematic variation of formal shapes is subordinated to the idea of a potential multitude of systems of order. Next to giving these ideas shape in sculptures and wall drawings, Lewitt, since the mid-sixties, has been using the book as a medium for presenting his concepts. For Lewitt, as for other artists at that time, the book was an adequate medium for realising one's ideas and expanding the traditional forms of presentation in exhibitions. A necessity also to be seen in the context of developing new artistic practices and dimensions aimed at breaking free of the museum and appropriating outside space for art. In the books Sol Lewitt realised as autonomous works, three formal lines of development can be differentiated: the early books mainly contain recordings of conceptual ideas in the form of simple sketches and descriptions; then, books were made in which colour or drawing systems were elaborated using various graphical means of expression; finally, books containing photographs were added, in which temporal and atmospheric aspects convey the concept. On the occasion of the exhibition, a catalogue designed by Sol Lewitt is published containing a list of all his book-projects. Only those are taken into account, however, which Lewitt regards as autonomous works; therefore the catalogues he designed, as well as small editions containing etchings and screen prints are excluded.
