Soft cover. Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. Stiff paper wrappers (softcover), 31 pages : color illustrations ; 24 cm. Very good/fine, clean, crisp, no internal marks. Text in English and Dutch. Scarce. Judith Leyster (1609-1660) of Haarlem is the most famous female painter of the Dutch Golden Age. In so far as is known, she was th…e first woman in the Western world to be officially recognised by a painters' guild as a master painter. It gave her the right to have her own workshop, take on pupils and sell her paintings independently. Contemporaries praised her as true 'ley-ster', a leading star in the artistic firmament. And she went far indeed. Leyster is one of the most important Dutch painters of the 1630s. In honour of her 400th birthday, the Frans Hals Museum and the National Gallery of Art in Washington, have jointly organised a small exhibition. Taking centre stage is Leyster's masterful "Self-portrait" (c.1632-1633), in which she presents herself as a spirited painter of portraits and so-called merry companies. Leyster's ambition and exceptional talent are displayed in 11 of her finest works. Throughout the centuries Leyster has been lauded, forgotten, rediscovered and variously interpreted. Catalog of an exhibition held at Frans Halsmuseum, Haarlem, Dec. 19, 2009-May 9, 2010.

Doornspijk, Davaco Publishers, 1989. 140 pp. 159 plts (18 col.). Hardcover, d./j. 4to. (Aetas Aurea. Monographs on Dutch & Flemisch Painting, Vol. IX). - - New copy !!Judith Leyster's (1609-1660) compelling oeuvre covers a wide range of interests: genre, still-life and portrait paintings; botanical drawings in watercolor and sil…verpoint; and at least one etching. Her work ranges from modest pieces to the iconographically complex. She painted card sharps and backgammon players; boys playing flutes, lutes or violins; men attempting to seduce women; and mothers sewing and combing their children's hair. She delighted in the play of sunlight on a wall and the mysterious shadows of night animated by the flickering of a candle flame. Although she is perhaps best known as a follower of Frans Hals, her innovative, small nocturnal paintings are perhaps her most significant contribution to Dutch art. Her successful depiction of genre scenes of both the jovial and the subdued is a testament to the breadth of her talent and versatility. The main text contains three chapters: her life, her painting and her critical fortune. Then the catalogue raisonné, a list of forty relevant documents, and a household inventory. Finally there is a bibliography and three indexes.
