This book is a wonderful combination of two Jews, one who brought to France, German literary tendencies, and the other who brought to the Germans, French artistic tendencies. Heinrich Heine has been called 'the first modern intellectual' and became one of the greatest and most respected writers of the 19th century. Leibermann was the Great German artist that led the Berlin secession group and introduced French impressionism to Germany. This fine press book, a magnificent combination of typography, design and illustration, is often lauded as among the most beautiful of Jewish fine press books if not all fine press books. Liebermann demonstrates a refined sensitivity in his artwork that parallels the emotive text. The Rabbi of Bacherach includes a lovely and romantic description of a Passover- the earliest and most expressive of the essence of the festival, in modern Jewish literature. The story here recounts that (in trans. and referring to the Haggadah) " It was an old heirloom, with ancient wine stains. It had come down from the days of her grandfather. Verso "Vor einem französischen Landhaus" originale Lithographie von Max Unold (1885 in Memmingen- 1964 in München) im Stein signiert und betitelt [Im August 1914 begann der Paul Cassirer Verlag mit der Herausgabe der "Kriegszeit", einer wöchentlichen, vierseitigen Publikation mit künstlerische Reaktionen auf den Ersten Weltkrieg…. Die meisten der im Magazin vertretenen Künstler gehörten der Berliner Secession an. In August 1914, Paul Cassirer Verlag began publishing Kriegszeit, a weekly, four-page broadsheet of artistic responses to World War I. Most of the featured artists were represented by Cassirer and were also affiliated with the Berlin Secession, the progressive exhibiting society that had frequently clashed with imperial art policies. Nevertheless, even these Kriegszeit contributors greeted the war with enthusiasm, and had confidence in the military under Wilhelm II and faith in the righteousness of the German cause. Max Liebermann captured the feelings of unity on his cover for the first issue, depicting a mass surging in support of the Emperor's declaration of war. Ultimately, fifty-one artists contributed 265 lithographs, including portraits of military leaders, scenes of military victories, sanitized images of daily life as a soldier, and caricatures of the enemy. All proceeds benefited an organization supporting destitute artists.].
