Based on experiences and observations in nature by the author, a naturalist who wrote his first book about otters, An Otter's Story (1953), and followed with A Beaver's Story (1958), A Black Bear's Story (1962), A Groundhog's Story (1976), and A Mink's Story (1979).

There's just a trace of wear at the extremities. The bottom edge of the page block has a small, black mark (possible remainder mark); the top edge has a small moisture stain. The dust jacket shows wear along the top and bottom edges, rubbing wear along the spine, and a scuff mark on the front panel. Not price-clipped, but the $3.00 price has been mostly erased or rubbed away. 192 pages with drawings by Ray Sherin to illustrate this story of a mother bear raising her two cubs in the woods of Minnesota, teaching them the way of life in the forest. The author was a naturalist who first wrote about otters, An Otter's Story (1953), followed by A Beaver's Story (1958), and A Black Bear's Story, which won a 1962 American Library Association Award and was chosen by Horn Book's Fanfare in 1962 as a best book in the Natural History category.
