SB viii+100pp. line drawings 2016 N&MP Reprint of 1848 Original EditionPublished Price £9.99 Described by its author as 'a useful little treatise' this book, simply and clearly written, and intended for study by 'soldiers and subalterns' is an exposition of the tactics to be used defending outposts. Opportunely published on the eve of the Crimean War and Indian Mutiny - which both featured the tactics it expounds in sieges and storming fortifications, - this timely treatise is also beautifully illustrated with drawings and diagrams.

Condition: New. 2015 N & M Press reprint SB 131 pp, platesPublished Price £11.50 The Home Guard, familiar to us all from the antics of Dad's Army on the TV, in fact performed a deadly serious role - guarding infrastructure and communications, and releasing the regular Army for more front-line work. This is one of the Home Guard's Unit histories, giving a detailed account of their history - from the Government's first appeal for volunteers onwards. The Home Guard's history stretched from the early anxious days in the summer of 1940 when a German invasion was hourly expected to the preparations for D-Day when the boot was on the Allied foot. It is a story of amateurism transformed into increasing sophistication and better weaponry; and a professional and patriotic dedication to often humdrum duty that united Great War veterans with youths awaiting the call-up to the regular forces. When they were finally disbanded in November 1944 the Home Guard deserved the thanks of a grateful nation that they had truly served and helped to save.

Condition: New. Reprint 2001, original 1933. SB xxiii + 594 pp with 24 illusPublished Price £22 This is a remarkably detailed history of the Royal Engineers in India beginning with the first British Enginers at the time of the establishment of the East India Company. Since the Engineers were present at all the wars involving East India Company soldiers and later the Indian Army, this is, in fact, a history of that Army over nearly 300 years to 1932. What makes the book so unique is that it is concerned solely with India & expeditions launched from there. There are accounts of the Mysore, Maratha, Nepalese, Burma, Afghan & Sikh Wars. The Indian Mutiny is covered in great detail - companies of the Bengal Sapper and Miners were among the mutineers. We read of siege warfare in practice - breaching batteries, tunnelling, mining, blowing obstacles & paving the way for infantry assault. There are also accounts of more peaceful activities such as the construction of roads, forts but by and large, it was a life of active service. Reorganizations of the Indian Army, the creation of the Bengal, Bombay & Madras Sappers & Miners (a gradual evolution from the original pioneer companies) are fully covered. In the Great War we follow the Sappers to the Western Front, to Mesopotamia, Egypt, Palestine, Persia and East Africa. This is a fine book, a worthy tribute to the British Officers of the RE who served with the Indian Army Sappers & Miners and to their men. There is a very good index.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Early printing. This book is in Very Good condition and is lacking the dust jacket. Early printing - no statement of printing on the copyright page, but the code B-S shows a February 1918 publication date. The book and its contents are in generally clean, bright condition. There are several small edge tears to the spine ends and some light bumping and rubbing to the corners. The covers have some beginning spots of ground-in dirt. The text pages are mostly clean and bright. This copy has been removed from the library of the Bohemian Club - it bears the bookplate of the Bohemian Club with a removed from Collection stamp on it. The front inner hinge is slightly loose. "Although Lieutenant Robert's modest preface makes little reference to the exploits which he has lived through, the readers of the extraordinary story which follows may care to know a few personal facts at the outset. It was in 1914 that this adventurous young American enlisted, and it was early in 1915 that he reached the Western Front.".

Condition: New. B&W photos, maps and diagramsPublished Price £14.50 The Tyne electrical engineers originated in the early 1880s as a specialist unit in Newcastle responsible for defending the port with submarine mines and searchlights. Its work and numbers grew, and it soon became a full-fledged unit of the Royal Engineers. In the Great War the unit pioneered the use of mobile searchlights, defending ports on its native Tyneside and at Gosport from air and sea attack with searchlight batteries. Units were also engaged on the western front, where, amongst other responsibilities, they supplied water for hard-pressed infantry on the Somme; helped in the tunnelling work that preceded the explosion of a score of gigantic mines at the battle of Messines Ridge. For anyone interested in the vital role of engineering in the Great War, this book is a must.
