L'incisione presenta il giovane Bonaparte, all'epoca Primo Console, tratta da un disegno a carboncino di Isabey, esposto al Salon del 1802, tradotto a stampa da Lingée e terminata da Godefroy."Là, j'exécutai le premier portrait en pied du général Bonaparte. Du matin au soir, je le voyais se promener solitairement dans le parc, les mains derrièere le dos, absorbé dans ses conceptions; il me fut aisé de saisir son expression pensive et la physionomie de sa tournure. Ce portrait terminé, je le présentai au general: la rassemblance lui en plut; il me félicita surtout de pouvoir travailler ainsi sans faire poser mon modèle.". Gabriel-Marie Legouvé è stato un noto poeta francese per il quale Isabey aveva realizzato delle illustrazioni da inserire come antiporta nei suoi libri, come nel caso dell'opera Le Mérite des femmes stampato a Parigi da l'Imprimerie de P.
