Condition: Very good. 9¼" x 7½". Two full leather albums. Together they have 60 leaves and hold a combined 85 photographs. Most photos measure between 4½" x 3¼" and 7" x 4½" and a small percentage are captioned. Albums very good with moderate wear, contents near fine or better. This is a collection of photographs taken while Richard Nixon was touring Paraguay in May 1958. They were created by Otto Lins-Morstadt a German silent film actor, writer and director who emigrated to Asunción, Paraguay sometime after World War II. Nixon went on an 18 day tour of eight Latin American countries beginning in late April 1958 and was in Paraguay for a couple of days beginning May 3rd. While there, he met with President Alfredo Stroessner and a contemporary newspaper account shared that "Nixon received a resounding welcome from the little country as he arrived for an 18-hour tour and visit with Stroessner. The greeting was marred only by the arrest of several students shouting 'long live liberty,' which Stroessner told the newsman was a Communist slogan." These photos were taken on the aforementioned tour and Nixon is seen in four of them. Approximately 16 photographs show the local populace. Several show a local market, a few show a folk dance and one shows women weaving. A number of scenic shots taken throughout Paraguay are also included. Accompanying the albums is a TLS from Nixon, thanking LinsMorstadt for sending him prints of the photos presumably seen in these albums.
