Stapled Wraps. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Offered is "Science in the Modern World," the text of a talk given by Dr. Linus Pauling on August 12, 1951 at the First Unitarian Church of Los Angeles, and published in print form in August 1951 as "August Sermon of the Month" by the First Unitarian Church of Los Angeles. A mimeographed publication, as issued, measuring 8-1/2" by 14" and containing five pages of text. Here are a few excerpts from Dr. Pauling's talk: "Scientists are often accused of being responsible for the present world situation, through having discovered how to make atomic bombs. Physicists are said to have a feeling of guilt, and even [Robert] Oppenheimer once said that physicists have known sin - he may have meant the sin of devoting themselves to destructive military applications of science rather than to pure science herself. I deny that scientists have been guilty in making their discoveries. They have, however, failed in some part to do their duty as citizens" - "Great numbers of scientific discoveries have been made during the last fifty years, and there has been as a result much technological progress, which could, in a world at peace, bring ever-increasing comfort and happiness to man" - "The atomic power plant and the atomic bomb are now a part of the world. The people of the world must decide what to do about them." Previously folded once; mailing label and canceled postage stamp to rear cover.

Trade paperback. Condition: Good. Hayward, Roger (illustrator). x, 262 pages. Illustrations. Books and Journals. Index. Minor damp signs at bottom edge and fore-edge toward the back. Nobel prize-winning scientist discusses nuclear testing and nuclear warfare. Linus Carl Pauling (28 February 1901 - 19 August 1994) was an American chemist, biochemist, chemical engineer, peace activist, author, and educator. He published more than 1,200 papers and books, of which about 850 dealt with scientific topics. New Scientist called him one of the 20 greatest scientists of all time, and as of 2000, he was rated the 16th most important scientist in history. For his scientific work, Pauling was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1954. For his peace activism, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1962. Pauling was one of the founders of the fields of quantum chemistry and molecular biology. His contributions to the theory of the chemical bond include the concept of orbital hybridization and the first accurate scale of electronegativities of the elements. Pauling also worked on the structures of biological molecules, and showed the importance of the alpha helix and beta sheet in protein secondary structure. Pauling's approach combined methods and results from X-ray crystallography, molecular model building, and quantum chemistry. His discoveries inspired the work of James Watson, Francis Crick, Maurice Wilkins and Rosalind Franklin on the structure of DNA, which in turn made it possible for geneticists to crack the DNA code of all organisms. In his later years he promoted nuclear disarmament. Around 1960, he began a campaign to obtain the signatures of scientists opposed to nuclear testing. A total of 11,021 scientists in 49 countries signed the petitions. He received the Nobel Prize for peace in 1962 for his work since 1946 "not only against the testing of nuclear weapons, not only against the spread of these armaments, not only against their very use, but against all warfare as a means of solving international conflicts." Apollo Edition [stated] Presumed first printing.
