2 volumes. 20.5 × 13.5 cm. xiii, [i in blank], 333, [iii]; [iv], 384 pp. Recent bindings with leather spines and corners, raised bands and gilt-tooled spines, with blind stamped decoration on the covers and corners. Covers lined with marbled paper and decorative endpapers. Copy with traces of a signature on the title page of the first volume, occasional damp stains, and missing a fold-out map of the Porto region. First and only original edition; Reprints and facsimiles have been published since 2009, usually based on copies held at the British Library, the Bavarian State Library or the University of Wisconsin. The Roman-numbered pages of Vol. I contain a preface, and the last two pages feature the publisher?s catalogue. Pages 289 to 384 of Vol. II contain an appendix. The appendix is not a continuous narrative text, but rather a collection of official documents compiled at the end of the second volume, used to provide historical context for the main narrative of Dom Pedro?s liberal expedition in Portugal. It comprises mainly military and political correspondence exchanged between the key figures in the campaign, including Dom Pedro, the Duke of Terceira, the Marquis of Palmela and other officers and diplomats associated with the liberal movement. It also includes orders of the day issued during military operations, reports on the landing at Mindelo and on the advance of the liberal forces, as well as communications relating to the Siege of Porto and developments in the military situation in the north of the country. In addition, there are proclamations addressed to the army and the Portuguese people, political texts and diplomatic documents relating to the international recognition of the liberal cause. The Portuguese expedition of 1832, known as the Mindelo landing, was led by King Pedro IV, against the backdrop of the Liberal Wars. It included key figures such as the Duke of Terceira and Admiral Sartorius, who were responsible for the military and naval organisation of the operation. This expedition enabled liberal forces to establish themselves in Porto, marking the start of the resistance against King Miguel?s absolutism. Its impact was decisive for the liberal victory and for the consolidation of the constitutional monarchy in Portugal. Sir George Lloyd Hodges (Limerick, 1792?1862) was a British Army.
