The Quakers, at that time, were mostly men of the humbler sort, and John Rodes was evidently of some account amongst them. It is delightful to read of the exceeding joy of these simple people at the conversion to their faith of one baronet. Having said that many of the letters are from William Penn, no less. 202pp with b/w and folding plates.

The letters reveal the profound spiritual beliefs and lived experiences of prominent members of the Society of Friends, including Sir John Rodes, a wealthy Quaker landowner, and his mother, Lady Rodes. Penned between 1690 and 1713, these letters provide valuable historical context, capturing the challenges and triumphs of early Quakers as they navigated religious persecution and sought to establish their faith in a hostile environment. Through their words, we learn about their spiritual practices, their commitment to peace and social justice, and their efforts to build a community based on equality and compassion. The letters also shed light on the personal lives of the Rodes family, offering insights into their family relationships, their struggles with illness, their financial concerns, and their hopes for the future. The author's eloquent prose and the raw emotions expressed in the letters transport readers back in time, allowing them to connect with the human experiences that transcend religious and historical boundaries. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
