Condition: Very good. 10 " x 13 ". Commercial "Aloha Hawaii" album, faux brown leather over boards, plastic bradbound and string-tied. 98 pages with 156 B&W photographs cornermounted mostly rectos + 3 laid in. Photos measure 2¾" x 4½" or 5" x 7" and nearly all are captioned. Album very good due to some scuffing and bits of loss; a few chips to edges of leaves not approaching images. Photographs very good plus. This is an album of beautiful photographs showing sailors stationed in Hawaii during World War II, at least some of which were shot by renowned photographer Tai Sing Loo. Tai Sing Loo was born to Chinese parents in Honolulu in 1886 and worked as a photographer there all his life. From 1919 until he retired in 1947, he was an official United States Navy photographer, shooting battleships, events and dignitaries' visits to the Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard. He helped break the Japanese codes detailing the attack that were run in false newspaper ads, and gained renown for his accomplished landscape shots. In 1984, the Navy issued a calendar honoring his career. He died in 1971. While this album is full of lovely images of Hawaiian landmarks and scenery, the standout are the 19 photos with Loo's imprint that reveal a group of Navy men; several others may have been taken by Loo as well. Six shots show their visit to "The Blow-Hole" on Oahu, a natural sea arch and popular tourist spot. We see them in ten photos at Kailua Beach, swimming, frolicking and posed in "Acrobatics." Two of these images identify nine of the sailors, and as our compiler noted, "The beach is as smooth as it looks." Three other lovely photos show their visit to the Mormon Temple. The seamen appear in an additional 28 shots, individually or in small groups, posed with palm trees, outside a bath house, the "Army + Navy Y.M.C.A.," "Lau Yee Chai's" famous Chinese restaurant in Waikiki, and cavorting in the sun. Our compiler shows us "Hula Girls," waterfalls and craters, yachts at Pearl Harbor, the "Moanalua Gardens," Hawaiians in the "Taro patch," "Loading sugar cane," "Climbing for cocoanuts" and the "Pineapple field." Three group shots laid in reveal the "Staff of Radar Maintenance School, Navy #128." A fantastic group of photos showing the beauty of Hawaii, as shot by a noted photographer and enjoyed by Navy men. Our research revealed six photographs taken by Loo at the Museum of Flight, 11 at the Bishop Museum, 15 at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, and one each at six other institutions all of these pre-date the present photos.
