Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. BYRON, Lord; WILBERFORCE, William; SHERIDAN, Richard; BECKFORD, William; PERCIVAL, Spencer; CANNING, George; PEEL, Robert et all: Autograph Register of Members of the House of Commons and House of Lords compiled by Robert Watmore, Inspector of Franks at the General Post Office, conta…ining over 900 original signatures of the political elite of Regency Britain. Manuscript register compiled in 1811 and subsequently updated. Oblong small folio ledger, manuscript throughout in ruled columns, with alphabetical index tabs A-Z. Approximately 934 autograph signatures of Members of Parliament and peers, the latter distinguished in red ink, with columns recording name and autograph. Contemporary notes throughout recording deaths, succession of titles and other changes, including the entry for Spencer Perceval annotated "Shot May 11 1812". Original binding stamped with the royal arms. Extensive notes written on the last 3 or 4 pages about key positions, and post holders of the government. Overall very good, with corners rubbed and marks throughout, but a well bound and robust working manuscript book. A remarkable working document of the British state during the Napoleonic Wars, compiled by Robert Watmore, Inspector of Franks at the General Post Office. Under the parliamentary franking system members of both Houses were entitled to send letters free of postage provided the cover was signed; postal clerks therefore required reliable examples of authentic signatures in order to detect fraudulent use of the privilege. Watmore's manuscript was created as a practical reference tool for that purpose, systematically recording the signatures and residences of members of the House of Commons and House of Lords together with a register of offices entitled to frank correspondence. The volume contains approximately 934 autograph signatures, representing an exceptionally large proportion of the contemporary Parliament and forming an extraordinary collective autograph record of the governing class of Regency Britain. Among those represented are eight British prime ministers: Spencer Perceval, George Canning, Robert Peel, Charles Grey, 2nd Earl Grey, William Grenville, 1st Baron Grenville, Frederick John Robinson, 1st Viscount Goderich, William Lamb, 2nd Viscount Melbourne and George Hamilton-Gordon, 4th Earl of Aberdeen. Other notable figures include William Wilberforce and Henry Brougham of the abolition movement; the foreign secretary Lord Castlereagh; the naval commander and radical politician Thomas Cochrane, 10th Earl of Dundonald; the reformer Sir Francis Burdett; the statesman William Huskisson; Prince Frederick, Duke of York; and Sir William Beresford. Literary and cultural figures include Lord Byron, who had taken his seat in the House of Lords in 1809 following his succession to the title; Richard Brinsley Sheridan, author of The School for Scandal and long-serving Whig MP for Stafford; and William Beckford, the author of Vathek and celebrated builder of Fonthill Abbey, who sat in Parliament at various times and was a prominent figure of Regency literary and collecting culture. The manuscript was clearly a living administrative document, with numerous contemporary annotations recording deaths, elevation to the peerage and other changes, demonstrating that it remained in active use within the Post Office for the verification of parliamentary franking privileges. The entry for Spencer Perceval, then serving as Prime Minister, bears the contemporary note "Shot May 11 1812", referring to his assassination in the lobby of the House of Commons, the only British prime minister murdered. A rare survival: a near-comprehensive autograph register of the British Parliament in 1811. Signed by Author(s).

Cutout. Condition: Gut. Wunderschönes Ensemble! Professionell gerahmt unter Passepartout: Handsigniertes Briefcutout mit Tinte von Lord Byron unter wunderschöner alter Portraitradierung /// Autogramm Autograph signiert signed signee /// George Gordon Noel, 6. Baron Byron (geborener George Gordon Byron; * 22. Januar 1788 in Londo…n, England; ? 19.

First edition. 128pp. With a half-title. Finely bound by Bayntun-Riviere of Bath (stamp-signed to verso of FFEP) in modern gilt-tooled blue calf, contrasting red and brown morocco lettering-pieces, A.E.G., marbled endpapers, gilt dentelles. Lightly rubbed, joints creased. Very occasional light spotting. W. A. Foyle's copy, with…his morocco bookplate to FEP. The first edition, published anonymously, of Byron's tragic narrative poem Lara, printed together with the first release of Samuel Rogers' (1763-1855) Jacqueline, a similar long narrative poem written in iambic tetrameter. Lara, intended as a sequel to Byron's previous narrative epic, The Corsair (1814), follows the journey of the mysterious Count Lara as he returns to his native country and leads a doomed serf rebellion against its rulers. In contrast, Rogers' Jacqueline tells the tale of a runaway bride, who is blessed with a forgiving father. Prior to their joint publication, Byron's admiration for Rogers had been well documented; he had acclaimed his fellow poet as 'melodious Rogers' in English Bards and Scotch Reviewers (1809), and to Rogers he had dedicated his first Oriental romance, The Giaour (1813). William Alfred Westropp Foyle (1885-1963), bookseller, co-founder of the eponymous bookshop on Charing Cross Road. Following his purchase of the former medieval monastery of Beeleigh Abbey in 1943, Foyle built an extensive personal library. In July 2000, following the death of his daughter and successor Christina, the library was dispersed at Christie's over three days, at the time being the most valuable English private library ever to be offered in Britain or on the Continent. Those books that remained with the family were sold by Dominic Winter Auctioneers in 2023 following the death of Foyle's grandson Christopher. Jackson p.381. Size: 8vo.

Contact seller3-star sellerHardcover. Condition: g+ to vg. First edition. Quarto (9 x 6"). XXI, [1], 261, [1]pp. Uncut. Later 19th-century gilt-lined 3/4 morocco over marbled paper covered boards, with gold lettering and tooling to spine. Raised bands. Top edge gilt. Marbled endpapers. Binding signed by Zaehnsdorf* on inside of front free endpaper. Set in… Venice in 1355, "Marino Faliero, Doge of Venice" is a blank verse tragedy in five acts by Lord Byron, who was inspired to take on this subject when, on examining the portraits of the Doges in the Palazzo Ducale in Venice, he discovered that the portrait of Faliero had been blacked out. The play tells the story of recently elected Doge of Venice Marino Faliero, who offends one of the chief officers of state, Michel Steno. Steno retaliates by writing on the Doge's throne an indecent libel on Faliero's wife. For this he is tried by the Council of Forty and convicted, but is only sentenced to a month's imprisonment. Faliero is so outraged by this, as he believes, inadequate punishment that he secretly joins in the conspiracy of a group of malcontents to overthrow the constitution of Venice, thinking thereby to gain revenge on his enemies. The plot is discovered and Faliero is executed. The main historical source Lord Byron drew on was Marino Sanuto's "Vite dei Doge" (published posthumously in 1733). He completed the play in July 1820, by which time he was living in Ravenna, and published it in April 1821, along with his "The Prophecy of Dante." Written at Ravenna during the month of June 1819, "The Prophecy of Dante" was intended for the Italians as a vision of "liberty and the resurrection of Italy" (see Medwin, "Conversations," (1824), page 241). Corners and head and tail of spine slightly rubbed. Foxing to very first and very last leaves. Minor and sporadic foxing throughout. Binding in overall good+, interior in good+ to very good condition. * A native of Budapest, Joseph Zaehnsdorf (1816-1886) was a celebrated Austria-Hungarian bookbinder who began his bookbinding career at the age of just 15 years old, as an apprentice. He founded his own binding firm in London when he was in his mid-twenties. His work won awards and critical acclaim at many exhibitions throughout Europe. A version of the Zaehnsdorf company is still in operation today, having merged with another prestigious London bookbinding company, Sangorski & Sutcliffe. The combined company was bought by Shepherds, another bookbinding company, in 1998 and still operates today.

Contact seller5-star sellerScarce complete first edition set of Byron's great work which was widely criticized as immoral upon publication and is now considered one of the greatest poems of the Romantics; from the library of American writer Erica Jong. Volume one was produced in quarto format and the subsequent 5 volumes in octavo (Davison abandoned the q…uarto format after disappointing sales of the first volume), six volumes uniformly bound in full morocco with gilt titles and tooling to the spine, double gilt ruling to the front and rear panels, gilt inner dentelles, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. With an autograph letter signed by Lady Byron bound into the first volume. Written from Moore Place, Esher, the letter reads in part, "Dear Sir, I am much obliged to you for offering to look for another young Teacher in place of the one who is engaged, but I have no difficulty in finding a Substitute. I should however be glad if you could find me an older master for a situation in Warwickshire - to manage a day-school on the Garden plan for Bogs - the emolument would not exceed 20 to 24 [pounds] with Board - He would be under the direction of a very good Clergyman - A single man would be preferred, there being no room at the Schoolhouse for him - she must lodge at some distance. Lady Olivia Sparrow is still active in her charitable undertakings, though I sometimes wish they were less governed by hasty feelings in religious matters. Yours truly A.I. Noel Byron Moore Place Esher Nov 19th." From the library of Erica Jong. Jong remains best known for her 1973 novel Fear of Flying which became famously controversial for its portrayal of female sexuality and figured prominently in the development of second-wave feminism. Written in the first person and narrated by its protagonist, 29-year-old American poet Isadora Wing, Fear of Flying was written in the throes of the Sexual Revolution of the 1970s and encapsulated the movementâs redefinition of female sexuality. In interviews, Jong stated: âAt the time I wrote Fear of Flying, there was not a book that said women are romantic, women are intellectual, women are sexualâ"and brought all those things together⦠What [Isadora is] looking for is how to be a whole human being, a body and a mind, and that is what women were newly aware they needed in 1973.â The novel remains a feminist classic and has sold more than 20 million copies worldwide. Jong notable used a quotation fromÂDonÂJuan as the epigraph in Fear of Flying, "Alas! the love of women! it is known To be a lovely and a fearful thing; For all of theirs upon that die is thrown, And if 'tis lost, life hath no more to bring To them but mockeries of the past alone, And their revenge is as the tiger's spring, Deadly, and quick, and crushing; yet, as real Torture is theirs -- what they inflict they feel. They are right; for man, to man so oft unjust, Is always so to women; one sole bond Awaits them -- treachery is all their trust; Taught to conceal, their bursting hearts despond Over their idol, till some wealthier lust Buys them in marriage -- and what rests beyond A thankless husband -- next, a faithless lover -- Then dressing, nursing, praying -- and all's over. Some take a lover, some take drams or prayers, Some mind their household, others dissipation, Some run away, and but exchange their cares, Losing the advantage of a virtuous station; Few changes e'er can better their affairs, Theirs being an unnatural situation, From the dull palace to the dirty hovel: Some play the devil, and then write a novel" (Lord Byron, Don Juan, 1824). In fine condition. Scarce and with fine provenance. "The War and Peace of English poetry, Don Juan contains an epic sweep that moves from Spain, to the East, and to Russia before ending in England⦠At the same time that Byron's broad canvas foretells the scope of the great 19th-century novels, the poet's own sensibilities echo the picaresque 18th-century novels of his early reading, Smollett and Fielding, with their bawdy humor and sly inversions of vice and virtue. Unlike these prose narratives, however, Don Juan has no beginning, middle, or end. It draws us in, not to learn 'what happens next' but to hear what this seductive, confidential, teasing voice is going to tell us" (Eisler, 610). When Cantos I through V appeared, they did so without the name of either author or publisher on the title page. Publisher John Murray refused to print Byron's dedicatory poem, which ridiculed English poet laureate Robert Southey, and Byron refused to put his name on a censored publication. Because of Byron's change from his long-standing publisher Murray to John Hunt (brother of writer Leigh Hunt) midway through Don Juan, complete first-edition copies with all cantos are scarce.

With Bauzonnet's receipt --- First complete collection of Byron's works in a luxury binding by the famous French binder Bauzonnet, with his signed receipt bound in and dated 1832: an uncommon example of Bauzonnet's work before his successful association with Georges Trautz. Antoine Bauzonnet (1795-1892) began his career working…in Paris as a gilder for Jean-Georges Purgold and a apprentice to René Simier - two major French binders of their time. Around 1829, Bauzonnet took over Purgold's workshop, and hired Georges Trautz in 1833, who later became his partner and in 1851, a head of the atelier after Bauzonnet retired. Francisque Cuzin and thenÉmile Mercier would be the subsequent binders of this workshop that ran until the Second World War. After the first edition published in 1826, Galignani included here a new portrait of Byron, engraved by James Hopwood the Younger. They kept the fold-out facsimile of a letter from Byron to Galignani denying authorship of Polidori's "Vampire", and a detailed biography of the poet by J.W. Lake, whose 'Life of Lord Byron' was also published in a separate edition by Galignani in 1826. This lovely production was printed by Jules Didot Senior (1794-1871), from the 4th generation of the famous family of French publishers. Famous for his invention of round-edged initials, Jules Didot took his printing presses to Brussels and founded the Royal Printing House there in 1825. Provenance: Physical description:Octavo (23.7 x 15.3 cm). Half-title, frontispiece with a portrait of Lord Byron by Hopwood on china paper laid down, title with vignette, [1] p. notice of the publishers, xl including toc and life of Byron, 768 pp., with 6 lithographed plates after Johannot and a lith. facsimile of a letter, handwritten note from the binder at end and contemporary handwritten note loosely inserted.
