Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. BYRON, Lord; WILBERFORCE, William; SHERIDAN, Richard; BECKFORD, William; PERCIVAL, Spencer; CANNING, George; PEEL, Robert et all: Autograph Register of Members of the House of Commons and House of Lords compiled by Robert Watmore, Inspector of Franks at the General Post Office, containing over 900 original signatures of the political elite of Regency Britain. Manuscript register compiled in 1811 and subsequently updated. Oblong small folio ledger, manuscript throughout in ruled columns, with alphabetical index tabs A-Z. Approximately 934 autograph signatures of Members of Parliament and peers, the latter distinguished in red ink, with columns recording name and autograph. Contemporary notes throughout recording deaths, succession of titles and other changes, including the entry for Spencer Perceval annotated "Shot May 11 1812". Original binding stamped with the royal arms. Extensive notes written on the last 3 or 4 pages about key positions, and post holders of the government. Overall very good, with corners rubbed and marks throughout, but a well bound and robust working manuscript book.  A remarkable working document of the British state during the Napoleonic Wars, compiled by Robert Watmore, Inspector of Franks at the General Post Office. Under the parliamentary franking system members of both Houses were entitled to send letters free of postage provided the cover was signed; postal clerks therefore required reliable examples of authentic signatures in order to detect fraudulent use of the privilege. Watmore's manuscript was created as a practical reference tool for that purpose, systematically recording the signatures and residences of members of the House of Commons and House of Lords together with a register of offices entitled to frank correspondence. The volume contains approximately 934 autograph signatures, representing an exceptionally large proportion of the contemporary Parliament and forming an extraordinary collective autograph record of the governing class of Regency Britain. Among those represented are eight British prime ministers: Spencer Perceval, George Canning, Robert Peel, Charles Grey, 2nd Earl Grey, William Grenville, 1st Baron Grenville, Frederick John Robinson, 1st Viscount Goderich, William Lamb, 2nd Viscount Melbourne and George Hamilton-Gordon, 4th Earl of Aberdeen. Other notable figures include William Wilberforce and Henry Brougham of the abolition movement; the foreign secretary Lord Castlereagh; the naval commander and radical politician Thomas Cochrane, 10th Earl of Dundonald; the reformer Sir Francis Burdett; the statesman William Huskisson; Prince Frederick, Duke of York; and Sir William Beresford. Literary and cultural figures include Lord Byron, who had taken his seat in the House of Lords in 1809 following his succession to the title; Richard Brinsley Sheridan, author of The School for Scandal and long-serving Whig MP for Stafford; and William Beckford, the author of Vathek and celebrated builder of Fonthill Abbey, who sat in Parliament at various times and was a prominent figure of Regency literary and collecting culture. The manuscript was clearly a living administrative document, with numerous contemporary annotations recording deaths, elevation to the peerage and other changes, demonstrating that it remained in active use within the Post Office for the verification of parliamentary franking privileges. The entry for Spencer Perceval, then serving as Prime Minister, bears the contemporary note "Shot May 11 1812", referring to his assassination in the lobby of the House of Commons, the only British prime minister murdered. A rare survival: a near-comprehensive autograph register of the British Parliament in 1811. Signed by Author(s).

Cutout. Condition: Gut. Wunderschönes Ensemble! Professionell gerahmt unter Passepartout: Handsigniertes Briefcutout mit Tinte von Lord Byron unter wunderschöner alter Portraitradierung /// Autogramm Autograph signiert signed signee /// George Gordon Noel, 6. Baron Byron (geborener George Gordon Byron; * 22. Januar 1788 in London, England; ? 19. I woke up one morning and found myself famous?

First edition. 128pp. With a half-title. Finely bound by Bayntun-Riviere of Bath (stamp-signed to verso of FFEP) in modern gilt-tooled blue calf, contrasting red and brown morocco lettering-pieces, A.E.G., marbled endpapers, gilt dentelles. Lightly rubbed, joints creased. Very occasional light spotting. W. A. Foyle's copy, with his morocco bookplate to FEP. The first edition, published anonymously, of Byron's tragic narrative poem Lara, printed together with the first release of Samuel Rogers' (1763-1855) Jacqueline, a similar long narrative poem written in iambic tetrameter. Lara, intended as a sequel to Byron's previous narrative epic, The Corsair (1814), follows the journey of the mysterious Count Lara as he returns to his native country and leads a doomed serf rebellion against its rulers. In contrast, Rogers' Jacqueline tells the tale of a runaway bride, who is blessed with a forgiving father. Prior to their joint publication, Byron's admiration for Rogers had been well documented; he had acclaimed his fellow poet as 'melodious Rogers' in English Bards and Scotch Reviewers (1809), and to Rogers he had dedicated his first Oriental romance, The Giaour (1813). William Alfred Westropp Foyle (1885-1963), bookseller, co-founder of the eponymous bookshop on Charing Cross Road. Following his purchase of the former medieval monastery of Beeleigh Abbey in 1943, Foyle built an extensive personal library. In July 2000, following the death of his daughter and successor Christina, the library was dispersed at Christie's over three days, at the time being the most valuable English private library ever to be offered in Britain or on the Continent. Those books that remained with the family were sold by Dominic Winter Auctioneers in 2023 following the death of Foyle's grandson Christopher. Jackson p.381. Size: 8vo.

Hardcover. Condition: g+ to vg. First edition. Quarto (9 x 6"). XXI, [1], 261, [1]pp. Uncut. Later 19th-century gilt-lined 3/4 morocco over marbled paper covered boards, with gold lettering and tooling to spine. Raised bands. Top edge gilt. Marbled endpapers. Binding signed by Zaehnsdorf* on inside of front free endpaper. Set in Venice in 1355, "Marino Faliero, Doge of Venice" is a blank verse tragedy in five acts by Lord Byron, who was inspired to take on this subject when, on examining the portraits of the Doges in the Palazzo Ducale in Venice, he discovered that the portrait of Faliero had been blacked out. The play tells the story of recently elected Doge of Venice Marino Faliero, who offends one of the chief officers of state, Michel Steno. Steno retaliates by writing on the Doge's throne an indecent libel on Faliero's wife. For this he is tried by the Council of Forty and convicted, but is only sentenced to a month's imprisonment. Faliero is so outraged by this, as he believes, inadequate punishment that he secretly joins in the conspiracy of a group of malcontents to overthrow the constitution of Venice, thinking thereby to gain revenge on his enemies. The plot is discovered and Faliero is executed. The main historical source Lord Byron drew on was Marino Sanuto's "Vite dei Doge" (published posthumously in 1733). He completed the play in July 1820, by which time he was living in Ravenna, and published it in April 1821, along with his "The Prophecy of Dante." Written at Ravenna during the month of June 1819, "The Prophecy of Dante" was intended for the Italians as a vision of "liberty and the resurrection of Italy" (see Medwin, "Conversations," (1824), page 241). Corners and head and tail of spine slightly rubbed. Foxing to very first and very last leaves. Minor and sporadic foxing throughout. Binding in overall good+, interior in good+ to very good condition. * A native of Budapest, Joseph Zaehnsdorf (1816-1886) was a celebrated Austria-Hungarian bookbinder who began his bookbinding career at the age of just 15 years old, as an apprentice. He founded his own binding firm in London when he was in his mid-twenties. His work won awards and critical acclaim at many exhibitions throughout Europe. A version of the Zaehnsdorf company is still in operation today, having merged with another prestigious London bookbinding company, Sangorski & Sutcliffe. The combined company was bought by Shepherds, another bookbinding company, in 1998 and still operates today.

Fore-Edge painting of boxing scene. Black and white plates inside (illustrator). Lansdowne Poets. Elegantly bound edition of Byron's poetry, illustrated with several full page black and white plates depicting scenes from the works. Far more interesting, however, is the unusual fore-edge painting depicting two shirtless boxers sparring in a ring surrounded by spectators. A fore-edge painting is unique bit of artistry whereby the fore edge of a book's textblock is painted with a scene such that it is only visible when the pages are fanned slightly. Most fore-edge paintings we have seen feature landscapes, city skylines, etc. This painting is signed "JL" at lower left corner of the image. Dark brown calf over bevelled boards with embossed rules and corner ornaments to both boards, Spine titled in gilt, ruled across four raised bands. Marbled endpapers, all edges gilt, floral pattern stamped in gilt on turn ins. Minor rubs to extremities and along joints, tiny bookseller tag to top inner margin of rear pastedown. Near fine overall. Full leather. Duodecimo. viii, 638 pages.

R. Stephensen. This edition is limited to 30 copies of which this is No. 8, signed by Frederick Carter.
