First French edition of a work originally published in Italian in 1647. First published in Italian under the pseudonym of Henri Giblet, Loredano's Histoire Des Rois De Chypre De La Maison De Lusignan offers a history of the Frankish kingdom of Cyprus, which lasted from 1192 to 1489. The author was a Venetian nobleman, politician and litterateur. In his introduction, Loredano claimed to be a Cypriot, and his use of the pseudonym 'Giblet' was a deliberate reference to the families that formed the Lusignan court who reigned over Cyprus. 'Loredano's history of the Lusignan Kings ends with the death of James III Lusignan, son of Caterina Cornaro and James the Bastard, that is, James II Lusignan' (Navari). Cobham-Jeffery p. 23; Blackmer 1031 (1667 edition); Leonora Navari, Cyprus and the Levant: Rare Books from the Sylvia Ioannou Foundation (2016).
