Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Volume II of the Oxford History of the British Empire examines the history of British worldwide expansion from the Glorious Revolution of 1689 to the end of the Napoleonic Wars, a crucial phase in the creation of the modern British Empire. This is the age of General Wolfe, Clive of India, and Captain Cook. The international team of experts deploy the latest scholarly research to trace and analyse development and expansion over more than a century. They show how trade, warfare, and migration created an Empire, at first overwhelmingly in the Americas but later increasingly in Asia. Although the Empire was ruptured by the American Revolution, it survived and grew into the British Empire that was to dominate the world during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. series blurb The Oxford History of the British Empire is a major new assessment of the Empire in the light of recent scholarship and the progressive opening of historical records. It deals with the interaction of British and non-western societies from the Elizabethan era to the late twentieth century, aiming to provide a balanced treatment of the ruled as well as the rulers, and to take into account the significance of the Empire for the peoples of the British Isles. It explores economic and social trends as well as political. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. POPULAR SCIENTIFIC RECREATIONS BY PROFESSOR A.M. LOW NO DATE DJ. Of late I have been listing books from a recent estate sale of a college professor who appreciated, as I do, vintage technology-oriented tomes, particularly handsome volumes. Here s one with a less serious vein but nevertheless attractive, namely: Popular Scientific Recreations, by Professor A.M. Low. This small hard cover book (5 ½ x 8 inches, 256 pages) was published by Ward, Lock & Co., Limited of London and Melbourne, without a date which I can find. It is bound in forest green cloth boards with black titles on cover and spine. What makes it more special is that the dust jacket has somehow survived, albeit a bit battered but still attractive. The book is very well illustrated with 16 illustrations (typically b&w photos printed on glossy paper) and 87 diagrams (typically pen & ink drawings, incorporated into the text). This book was probably intended for teenagers, but I think it will make a great reference book for high school science teachers looking for fun experiments for their classrooms. Condition: This book is in very good condition. The dust jacket, as mentioned however, has a good deal of wear, mostly along the edges but including chips out of the top & bottom of the spine. It is, nevertheless, still largely intact and a great candidate for a mylar sheath. The hard covers are dust dulled but generally clean with a big bump to the upper left-hand corner and some minor rubbing to the spine tips and corners as well. Inside, there is a brief, inked gift inscription on the front endpaper but these are the only marks I found. The interior pages and plates are clean and bright and there is no age-toning or foxing (except some very minor and incipient foxing on the rear endpaper). Both hinges are fully intact, and the binding is tight and sound. This book is not ex-library or a remainder.
