United States Navy officer and naval architect who served as Chief of the Bureau of Ships during World War II. In this capacity, he was directly responsible for the Navy's massive shipbuilding and maintenance program from November 1942 until November 1946. Great Association item. Thirteen folding maps, charts or plans (up to 32 in. x 47 in.) - four following the first report, and nine following the second report. Dark brown cloth boards with blind-stamped frame to boards and gilt title to front. Rubbing to extremities, with chips to head and tail of spine. Much of the gilt title has turned deep green. Corners nudged and showing. Some edge wrinkling and browning. Faded tidelines to bottom fore-edge corner of first report; tidelines to fore-edge of rear endpapers. Maps and charts are clean, but seams are tender; some light browning and closed tears to map seams and to bottom left corners (against the hinge). The two reports each maintain their own title pages: "REPORTS OF EXPLORATIONS AND SURVEYS FOR THE LOCATION OF A SHIP-CANAL BWTEEN THE ATLANTIC AND PACIFIC OCEANS THROUGH THE ISTHMUS OF PANAMA, 1875 BY THE UNITED STATES NAVAL EXPEDITION COMMANDER EDWARD P.
