Medizinstudium in Leiden, Dr. med. 1736-1753 Professor für Anatomie, Botanik u. Chirurgie in Göttingen. "Bei allem wissenschaftlichen Ehrgeiz erstrebte Haller von Anfang an eine Laufbahn im bernischen Staatsdienst. Mit Unterstützung des Schultheissen Isaak Steiger trat Haller 1745 in den Berner Gr. Rat ein, dem er in absentia angehörte, bis er 1753 nach Bern zurückkehrte und das Amt des Rathausammanns erhielt, das er bis 1757 versah. 1758-64 war er Direktor der bernischen Salinen in Roche (VD), 1762-63 zudem Amtsstatthalter von Aigle." (etc; HLS) - Mülinen publiziert 2 Briefe von P. L. M. de Maupertuis an Haller, um ihn zu bewegen nach Berlin zu ziehen (1749 u. 1750). "Der Abdruck der beiden Briefe rechtfertigt sich dadurch, dass L. Hirzel, der sie nicht kennen konnte, sie in seiner vortrefflichen Biographie Hallers nicht erwähnt. Haller ist auf die Anerbietung schiesslich nicht eingegangen. Die Hoffnung, in der Heimat ein Amt zu erhalten [.] bewog ihn dazu." (Mülinen, p. 3) - Was dann aber noch etwas auf sich warten liess : "Da brachte ihm das Jahr 1758 die Beförderung: er wurde zum Direktor des Salzbergwerke in Roche im unteren Wallis ernannt. Es galt dies als ein Amt erster Klasse, da es nebst freier Wohnung ein Einkommen von 2760 Kronen (Fr. 9660) eintrug. Am 28. Juni langte er mit einer Installationskommission von vier Mann in Roche an, wo am folgenden Tage die feierliche Einführung in das Amt vorschriftsgemäss stattfand und das dortige Bergwerkspersonal bis herab zu den Wagknechten und Küfern vereidigt wurde." (etc.; Tobler, p. 2) - "Seinen Berichten maß man in Bern eine solche Wichtigkeit bei, daß man sie einzubinden und aufzubehalten beschloß, und die im Juni 1764 erscheinende Inspektionskommission wußte nicht nur zu rühmen, mit welch ausnehmender Höflichkeit sie von Herrn Salzdirektor Haller sei empfangen und kostbar bewirtet worden, sondern auch in welch trefflichem und wesentlich verbessertem Zustande die Bergwerke und die Domäne sich befinden. [.] Ordnung, peinlichste Gewissenhaftigkeit war System, Ordnung bildete die Größe und Stärke - aber zugleich die Schwäche des alten Bern, da die autokratisch-kleinliche Bevormundung des einzelnen von oben herab das frische Leben ertötete, das Individuum lahm legte und den Staatskörper zur Mumie erstarrte."
