Er gilt als der Begründer eines neuen dichterischen Schaffens, in dem der Dichter nicht mehr ohne Notwendigkeit nur aus Spielerei und kluger Berechnung sich zum Dichten veranlaßt fühlt, sondern einem inneren Rufe folgend geradezu mit zwingender Notwendigkeit sich mit seiner ganzen Existenz dem Dich-tertum als seinem Berufe hingibt und weiht. Diese Neuerung hängt mit der Lockerung des Gefühlslebens eng zusammen und wird durch den Aufbruch der Gefühlskultur in der ersten Hälfte des 18. Jahrhunderts bedingt. Das neue Ich- und Weltgefühl" bewirkt in Klopstock ein leidenschaftliches Gemütserleben, das mit innerer Notwendigkeit nach künstlerischer Entladung drängte und sich Ausdrucksformen schuf, ebenso neu und allem Vorhandenen unvergleichbar, wie ihr Erlebnisinhalt selbst". Bei Klopstock offenbart sich zum erstenmal im Dichter der Mensch. Dichten ist Lebensbedürfnis, Dichten wird zur Beichte im Goetheschen Sinne. Klopstock stellt sich dar als ,Gelegenheitsdichter', der nicht dichten kann, wann es ihm gefällt, der vielmehr auf seine Stunden, die Stunden der Weihe, warten muß. German engraving from the 18th century representing a village celebrating spring with dances and a 'kunst' market. The personnages represented are quite charicaturized (dwarf?). On the bottom of the print a poem in German reads:"Seht wie die freundlich Gred, / Mit ihrem Aufbutz schwantzet. / Her Hannss die Füsse dreht / biss er das Lam[m] ertantzet." Above also another poem on a cartouche: "Auf dieser Früh-/lings Kirchweijh/seund in meinem / Kram vor das schöne / Frauen Zimer aller / hand vortreffliche / Gallanterijen und / rarre Kunst / Stuck."
