The original Genesee Farmer had been absorbed into The Cultivator in 1839, which was published in Albany by Buel. Thomas and Bateham reformed the magazine and began publishing right away in order to service the burgeoning orchard and farming businesses surrounding Rochester, New York, which would eventually become within a few decades a vast nursery operation. The articles focus on farm equipment, threshing machines, beekeeping, recipes, controlling weeds, growing vegetables, grains, cooking recipes, and much more. In addition there are a number of letters to the editor, and commentary on the growing problem of educated daughters of farmers deciding to leave the land, and a backlash against a liberal education for women.
