He was the hydrographer for Napoleon. He was named hydrographic engineer in chief, for the ambitious project of surveying the coasts of France, beginning 1816. His labors took him to many parts of the world and many navigators owed him an untold debt. In 1853, at a ceremony to unveil a bust of him and to commemorate his official retirement in 1848, he was honored as the man who has `created that admirable hydrographic science which is the torch of navigation.'.
