Lumpkin was a Georgia-born sociologist and memoirist, also the sister of radical novelist Grace Lumpkin and long-time Director of Research at the Institute of Labor Studies in Northampton. She and her sisters' journeys through in the pre-Civil Rights South were profiled in the book Sisters and Rebels by Jacquelyn Dowd Hall. Her best-known work is The Making of a Southerner.
