Condition: Very Good. First American edition. 2 volumes, first US edition, 1849 Vol 1, 619 pp plus 12 pages of publisher's advertisements, vol 2, 617 pp plus 14 pages of publisher's advertisements 3/4 leather on brown cloth Spines with 5 raised bands with gilt lettering Spines worn and leather scuffed, but otherwise in excellent… condition, with what appear to be newer bright marbled endpapers in both volumes Pages are also marbled on three sides Some modest foxing, primarily on first few pages Overall, an excellent US first edition set of a classic work Interestingly, the initial owner of the book used a newspaper classified ad clipping for and Ice merchant in Columbus Ohio as a bookmark at Page 379 of volume 1 (see photo) This corresponds to a bookseller label from Huntington & MacIntire, Booksellers of Columbus at the back of volume 2 The text blocks of both volumes are so tight and solid that it is not likely that the reader ever finished reading all the way through :) Thomas Babington Macaulay, 1st Baron Macaulay, (1800 â?" 1859) was a British historian and politician He wrote extensively as an essayist, on contemporary and historical sociopolitical subjects, and as a reviewer His History of England was a seminal and paradigmatic example of Whig historiography, and its literary style has remained an object of praise since its publication, including subsequent to the widespread condemnation of its historical contentions which became popular in the 20th century He published the first two volumes in 1848, this American edition coming out the following year.
