Paperback. Condition: Near Fine. xv, 406, xix pages, [48] pages of plates, illustrations, map; 23 cm. First published, 1951. Tight, clean copy. Spine slightly faded. Age toning. Another copy available. *** "No biographer could ask for a more colorful or difficult subject than the painter and revolutionary Gustave Courbet. One of the fathers of Realism, a style he created with his huge canvases of his birthplace in Ornans (After Dinner at Ornans, 1949; Funeral at Ornans, 1850, and The Stonebreakers, 1850), Courbet chose his subjects from ordinary life and portrayed them with the same monumental dignity as the great men of history. A man with big appetites for life, women, and politics, he frequently found himself at odds with French authorities, especially during the period of the Commune when he and his friends pulled down the Vendome Column. Impressionism and Modernism would be unthinkable without his fierce opposition to the academies of art. This biography by one of the most reliable students of French art paints a large and fascinating canvas, which Courbet dominates but never overwhelms. / Gerstle Mack wrote biographies of Toulouse-Lautrec and Cezanne, as well as other studies in French culture." - Publisher. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. 1st Edition. GUSTAVE COURBET BY GERSTEL MACK RUPERT HART-DAVIS 1951 LONDON HARD COVER DJ. According to the description on the rear cover of the dust jacket, this book is: the first full-length biography in English of Gustave Courbet (1819-1877), the leader of the realist movement and one of the most important painters of the nineteenth century. Courbet revolutionized the art of his own time by substituting ordinary people for the knights and damsels of the classical and romantic schools. His insistence upon the beauty of everyday scenes and proletarian subjects exerted a profound influence upon the impressionists and, through them, upon the painting of the twentieth century. I am very pleased to be able to offer the large biography titled: Gustave Courbet, by Gerstle Mack. This large hard cover book (6 ½ x 9 ½ inches, 406 pages plus 19 pages of index) was published by Rupert Hart-Davis of London, dated 1951 and a First Edition, with the same date on title and copyright pages. The book is bound in black cloth covers with gilt titles on the spine; it is protected by a printed paper dust jacket. There are a group of sixty illustrations which follow the main body of the text after page 366. There is also a map of Franche-Comte and Western Switzerland, at the outset of the book. Condition: This book is in very good condition. The dust jacket shows some rubbing and edge wear and is lightly soiled and price-clipped. However, it has done its job as the hard covers are bright and clean with clear gilt titles on the spine. Inside, there is a bookstore label on the front endpaper and some signs of something having been erased. Otherwise, the book is unmarked and the pages and plates are clean, from cover to cover. Both hinges are fully intact, and the binding is tight and sound. This book is not ex-library or a remainder.
