The author was a Scottish journalist who lived in Canada for several years, working at a Toronto newspaper and travelling throughout Canada and the United States. He then went to work for the London Morning Chronicle for whom he undertook the travels, in 1846-47, that formed the basis of this work, but left his job in 1849 when the Chronicle indicated its opposition to the Rebellion Losses Bill in Canada. His descriptions of the social conditions and mores of the people with whom he met, the topography of the country through which he travelled, and the political and economical environment in which he found himself are excellent. 12mo, 19.2cm, First American Edition, in 2 volumes. 312,[xxx] & 316pp., (publisher's catalogue), in the original black cloth, blind stamped decorations and borders on the boards and spine, gilt spine titles, wear on the top and bottom spine edges, some slight foxing throughout, sound, very good.
