This offering is an ex-library copy, in good condition, of Peer Gynt written by Henrik Ibsen and decorated by Elizabeth MacKinstry. The book does have library markings, and library wear . . . and the look of an older Heritage Press book. The book as published by Doubleday, Doran & Company, Inc. in 1929 and is a stated First Edition, though at best that would have to be an American First . . . as it's a translation of the original. It's not a small book, and it's heavy. The book is 7" by 11 1/8" and has 287"thick" pages with black-and-white illustrations throughout as well as several color plates which are not included in the page count. I'd heard of the book, but didn't realize that it's a play written in poem form. (This from a math major so you'll have to excuse my ignorance please.) Thank you!

The author and illustrator, Elizabeth MacKinstry (1878-1956), was born in Pennsylvania but grew up in Paris where she studied the violin with Eugene Ysaye. After her musical career ended by illness, she studied art. This was her first published work, which began her long career as an illustrator. In Very Good+ Condition: corners rubbed; minor loss at tail end of back joint; boards are very lightly soiled; otherwise, clean and bright.

By rubbing this Magical lamp, from a poor lad in Rags he became the rich merchant Aladdin. Elizabeth Mackinstry adds new luster to this oldest of fairy tales with her pictures in gorgeous colors and carefully patterned black-and-white. The jewels in the secret cave glow with Oriental richness; jovial genii, grinning broadly, build Aladdin's palace in a sapphire night, while the Fire-Bird and the Roc hover graciously on the outskirts, and in the background the Wicked Magician scowls in rage or leers in horrid triumph.
