Spine darkened to navy blue, light cap crushing and minor board nicks, period Astronomical Library bookplates and printer front pastedowns. Sir Thomas Maclear resigned directorship in Spring 1870. On 4 June 1870 Edward James Stone was appointed "Her Majesty's Astronomer at the Cape". Transit-circle observations by Thomas and George Maclear, William Mann, George Christie; Donati's Comet observations were reported in Memoirs RAS (Vol.29).
