Esta obra é paradigmática da visão dos defensores do Antigo Regime, apoiantes do Miguelismo, focando-se numa análise totalmente negativa da Constituição de 1822 e da sua forte relação com a Maçonaria, que considera ser responsável pela revolução francesa e por todos os males daí decorrentes, incluindo as lutas políticas em Portugal. Consequentemente, ataca-a de forma violenta: «facção anárquica e perversa», «temíveis e venenosos monstros», «seita de monstros formados das escórias do inferno», entre muitas outras declarações. Malheiro da Silva considera o autor como um «operoso publicista contra-revolucionário, muito interessante do ponto de vista doutrinário». Faustino José da Madre de Deus de Sousa Coutinho (Lisboa, 1770? - 1833) estudou no colégio de S. Lucas na Casa Pia, e foi discípulo em matemática do célebre professor José Anastácio da Cunha. Entrando depois no serviço da armada, chegou ao posto de segundo, ou primeiro Tenente, do qual se diz que pediu a demissão, por desgosto motivado pela preterição que sofrera. Leccionou em colégios e casas particulares, onde ensinava filosofia racional, e matemática elementar. Foi mação em tempos antigos, mas abandonou depois a sociedade, e escreveu contra ela. Residia na freguesia de S. Tomé, onde faleceu de cólera. Foi autor de cerca de uma vintena de obras e colaborou nos periódicos, Trombeta Final, e Gazeta de Lisboa, em 1828. In quarto. 20,5x14,5 cm. xii, 60 pages. Paperback, with decorative covers painted with floral motifs. Copy with handwritten ownership title and traces of attempted erasure on the title page. Very rare first edition. A second edition was published in 1824. This work is paradigmatic of the vision of the defenders of the Ancien Régime, supporters of Miguelism, focusing on a totally negative analysis of the 1822 Constitution and its strong relationship with Freemasonry, which it considers to be responsible for the French Revolution and all the evils that resulted from it, including the political struggles in Portugal. Consequently, attacks it violently: "anarchic and perverse faction", "fearsome and poisonous monsters", "sect of monsters formed from the dregs of hell", among many other statements. Malheiro da Silva considers the author to be a "hard-working counter-revolutionary publicist, very interesting from a doctrinal point of view". Faustino José da Madre de Deus de Sousa Coutinho (Lisbon, 1770? - 1833) studied at Colégio de S. Lucas in Casa Pia, and was taught mathematics by the famous professor José Anastácio da Cunha. He then joined the navy and rose to the rank of second or first lieutenant, from which he is said to have resigned out of disgust at being passed over. He taught in colleges and private houses, where he taught rational philosophy and elementary mathematics. He was a Mason in the old days, but later left the society and wrote against it. He lived in the parish of S. Tomé, where he died of cholera. He was the author of around twenty works and collaborated with the periodicals Trombeta Final and Gazeta de Lisboa in 1828. As páginas preliminares contêm o artigo das actas da Academia da Sessão de 5 de abril de 1797, em que se determinou a publicação desta obra a expensas da Academia, com assinatura de António Caetano do Amaral, secretário interino da Academia e o índice da obra. A folha final contém um extenso catálogo das publicações da Academia. Exemplar muito completo, pois apresenta 4 folhas preliminares enquanto Inocêncio e Borba só referem 3 e inclui a folha final com o catálogo das obras da Academia, referida por Borba, mas que não existe no exemplar da BNP. Primeira edição rara. Foram publicadas mais as seguintes edições: a segunda, no Rio de Janeiro, em 1847, a terceira edição em 1920, no Rio de Janeiro, com biografia do autor e notas de Affonso d"Escragnolle Taunay, posteriormente reeditada em 1953. Muito importante para a história do Brasil e da colonização portuguesa que iria dar origem à nova nação. Divide-se em dois livros, no primeiro trata da fundação da capitania de S. Vicente por Martim Afonso de Sousa, o seu primeiro donatário, que depois foi Vice-Rei da Índia; da fundação do Porto de Santos, da Fundação de S. Paulo, (que incluiu os territórios de S. Vicente e de Minas gerais) e da Fundação da Vila de Nossa Senhora da Conceição de Itanhaem. No segundo livro são descritas, com grande pormenor, a fundação da capitania de Santo Amaro, os seus progressos enquanto foi governada por Pedro Lopes de Sousa e pelos seus descendentes e as contendas sobre os limites geográficos desta capitania até ser integrada na Coroa portuguesa. O autor transcreve diversos alvarás e cartas de D. João III. Frei Gaspar da Madre de Deus (Fazenda de Santa Ana, São Vicente, 1715 - Santos, 1800) Pertencia às mais antigas famílias de povoadores vicentinos, sendo os seus pais proprietários de terras de cultivo de cana-de-açúcar e de arroz. Estudou no Colégio da Companhia de Deus, em Santos. Em 1731, aos 16 anos de idade, apresentou-se como postulante ao noviciado na Ordem de São Bento, onde passou a ser chamado de Gaspar da Madre de Deus; foi noviço na Bahia, onde estudou Filosofia, História e Teologia. Quando foi ordenado em 15 de agosto de 1732, já era uma figura de destaque na própria Ordem. Realizou uma viagem a Portugal e quando regressou obteve a cadeira de mestre no mosteiro da cidade do Rio de Janeiro. Doutorou-se em 18 de maio de 1749. Em 1759 tornou-se membro da 'Academia Brasílica dos Renascidos'. No ano de 1762, foi eleito Abade do Rio de Janeiro, tomando posse em 2 de outubro de 1763 e a 9 de fevereiro de 1766, tomou posse do cargo de abade provincial da Ordem no Brasil, que exerceu até 1769. The preliminary pages contain the article from the Academy's minutes of the session of 5 April 1797, in which it was decided to publish this work at the Academy's expense, with the signature of António Caetano do Amaral, the Academy's acting secretary, and the work's table of contents. The final page contains an extensive catalogue of the Academy's publications. A very complete copy, as it has 4 preliminary pages while Inocêncio and Borba only mention 3. It also includes the final page with the catalogue of the Academy's works, mentioned by Borba, but which does not exist in the BNP copy. Rare first edition. The following editions were published: the second, in Rio de Janeiro, in 1847, the third edition in 1920, in Rio de Janeiro, with a biography of the author and notes by Affonso d'Escragnolle Taunay, later reissued in 1953.
