Quella che presentiamo è la traduzione di un testo composto in lingua latina da Vincenzo Maggi, filosofo, letterato ed umanista bresciano nato a Pompiano nel 1498 e morto a Ferrara nel 1564. L'orazione originale, intitolata Mulierum praeconium o De mulierum praestantia, era stata scritta da Maggi nel 1545, due anni dopo il suo trasferimento a Ferrara, dove, oltre a proseguire l'insegnamento universitario, aveva ricevuto anche l'incarico di precettore del rampollo del Duca Ercole II d'Este. L'orazione, dedicata alla figlia di Ercole e di Renata di Francia, Anna d'Este, nello stesso anno era stata tradotta in volgare da un anonimo col bel titolo di Un brieve trattato dell'eccellentia delle donne. L'edizione in Italiano del testo comprendeva anche una Essortatione (anch'essa anonima, ma attribuita a un certo Ortensio Lando) a gli huomini perché non si lascino superar dalle donne, che si pone come contraltare all'orazione del Maggi.
