Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. The third wave of democratization produced a wealth of enduring social science. Beginning in the 1970s, it prompted scholars to develop important theories on authoritarian breakdowns and transitions to democracy. No one in the field was more influential than Guillermo O'Donnell (1936-2011),…whose pathbreaking work shaped the scholarship of generations of social scientists. Reflections on Uneven Democracies honors the legacy of O'Donnell's research by advancing debates related to his work on democracy. Drawing together a veritable Who's Who of eminent scholars - including two of O'Donnell's closest collaborators, Philippe Schmitter and Laurence Whitehead - the volume examines issues related to democratic breakdowns and stability, the nature and quality of new democracies, institutional strength, the rule of law, and delegative democracy. This reexamination of some of the most influential arguments about democracy of the past forty years leads to original approaches and insights for a new era of democracy studies. Students of democracy and institutional performance, both Latin Americanists and comparativists more generally, will find this essential reading. Students of democracy and institutional performance, both Latin Americanists and comparativists more generally, will find this essential reading. Contact seller5-star sellerHardcover. Condition: Fair. First Edition. (no dust jacket, but encased in a nice-looking facsimile reproduction of the original first edition jacket; see 2nd image posted with this listing) [moderately worn book, spine slightly turned, covers just a bit warped, much external soiling and light staining, a couple of faint beverag…e-ring marks on front cover, small stain at top edge of title page; essentially a reading/reference copy only]. Scarce poetic/"proletarian" work about "a youth with a beauty-questing soul [and] a strange heritage - - a wanderlust that cannot be quelled and a love of the soil that draws him back to it after each defeat." The author's first novel and, as it turned out, the only book he ever published under his own name. He later achieved considerable success in the semi-hardboiled vein as "Geoffrey Homes," although he continued to use his own name for his screenwriting efforts (most notably the adaptation of his final novel, "Build My Gallows High," into the wonderful film noir OUT OF THE PAST, and the screenplay for Don Siegel's ultra-creepy INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS). Like much of his detective fiction, this novel is set in California, and includes a passage dealing with the protagonist's work as a newspaperman in Los Angeles. (Baird & Greenwood 1641) NOTE again that this book bears a FACSIMILE dust jacket, which has not been factored in to our pricing. Illustrated by (dj) Falls (illustrator).
