HB, 192 ppPublished Price £19.99 A distinguished soldier who had served in South Africa, the Author was selected to be Haigâs Director of Operations in 1915, a key position he held until the end of the War. This book concentrates on the dramatic events of 1917 and 1918 and covers Third Ypres, the German onslaught (Kaiserschlacht), and the victorious 100 Days. We learn of the parlous state of the French Army, their loss of morale and the widespread mutinies.Tavish Davidsonâs viewpoint on the conduct of operations was unique and we learn of the factors at play in Haigâs HQ. The German U-Boat fleetâs ports became a high priority as losses of shipping mounted, threatening the whole war effort. We get the German perspective â" Passchendaele 1917 was even more costly for them than the Allies.Davidson comes down wholeheartedly on Haigâs side but this should not be a surprise as Haig was revered by his officers and men. It only became fashionable to pillory him much later. This is an important addition to the bibliography of the Great War.

A few have shown up at auction in recent years. From wikipedia: Daniel Harvey Hill (July 12, 1821 September 24, 1889), commonly known as D. H. Hill, was a Confederate general who commanded infantry in the eastern and western theaters of the American Civil War. Hill was known as an aggressive leader, being severely strict, deeply religious, and having dry, sarcastic humor. He was brother-in-law to Stonewall Jackson and a close friend to both James Longstreet and Joseph E. Johnston, but disagreements with both Robert E. Lee and Braxton Bragg cost him favor with Confederate President Jefferson Davis. Although his military ability was well respected, Hill was underused by the end of the American Civil War because of these political feuds. Hill joined the faculty of Davidson College in 1854. In 1859 he was appointed as superintendent of the North Carolina Military Institute of Charlotte.

"The Door in the Wall" is a short story by H. G. Wells first published in the Daily Chronicle in 1906 and first collected in his The Country of the Blind and Other Stories in 1911. It covers the whole life of a successful politician who has always been haunted by his memory of having in early childhood been welcomed into a paradisal garden of innocent happiness, access to which depends on finding by chance a particular door. Over the years he has several times rediscovered the door in different locations in London, but has always declined to enter, being distracted by some step in the advancement of his worldly career. It is widely considered to be one of Wells's finest short stories, has influenced other writers, and has been filmed three times. Provenance: no inscriptions or bookplates.
