Gegründet wurde die Gruppe aber in Amerika, wo sie im Zuge des "American Folk Music Revival" der 1950/60er-Jahre bekannt wurde. Sie machten traditionelle irische Balladen, Trinklieder, Sea-Shanties und die Lieder des irischen Widerstand gegen die Briten in Amerika bekannt, trugen aber mit Gruppen wie "The Dubliners" und "The Wolfe Tones" nicht zuletzt auch zu deren Revitalisierung in Irland selbst bei. Die Brüder beeinflussten auch den jungen Bob Dylan, mit dem sie befreundet waren. Paddy Clancy betrieb 1956-61 in Amerika das Folkmusic-Label "Tradition Records", wo er neben Platten der eigenen Gruppe auch solche von Künstlern wie Odetta, Mary O'Hara, Jean Ritchie, Alan Lomax u.a. produzierte.
