The book suffers from a multitude of issues: the red spine strip is detached at the head the front hinge is cracked, causing the body of the book to be partially detached, though still firmly held in place by the back one; a small section the spine is unravelling towards the head, where it is also fraying and the boards are chipped at the edges; there are intermittent short tears throughout the book. The book has clearly been loved and frequently read. In its favour, the illustrations are still sharp and the pages clean. ". Peg's Fairy Book, first published in 1944, sold more than 180,000 copies in the 1940s and 1950s.".

Peg Maltby (1899-1984) Peg and her husband George migrated to Australia in 1924 and lived in Victoria all their lives during the depression to supplement her income she started painting chocolate boxes. Her talent as a flower painter caught the eye of the publishers Murfetts who commissioned fifteen paintings of fairies and gypsies in woodland settings, which became her first book, Peg's Fairy book in 1944. This work was overwhelmingly successful and she followed this success with the Pip and Pepita series about a family of mice. CONDITION 32 pages with 9 beautiful colour illus, small sepia sketches to pages without colour illus. Stapled heavy card, red cloth spine, edges slightly rubbed, internally very nice with sl finger smudges to page edges. Size: 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall.
