"Die Jahre 1930 bis 1933, in denen die Erzählungen des vorliegenden Bandes entstanden sind, bedeuten für Glausers Leben die Zeit der Entscheidung. Nach dem Besuch einer Gartenbauschule beschließt Glauser endgültig, eine Existenz als freier Schriftsteller zu wagen. Anfangs dominieren dabei die Rückschläge: Seinen 1930 beendeten Roman "Gourrama" kann er, trotz Überarbeitung, nicht veröffentlichen; der Versuch, sich in Paris als Journalist und freier Autor zu etablieren, endet in einem Drogenfiasko, an das sich Gefängnishaft und psychiatrische Internierung anschließen. Dennoch findet Glauser erstmals nachhaltige Anerkennung: Die Lebensberichte, die im Schweizer Spiegel erscheinen, finden positives Echo und wecken bei anderen Zeitschriften das Interesse an ihm; von nun an kann er jeden seiner Texte ohne Schwierigkeiten publizieren. Anfang 1933 erfindet Glauser zudem seinen Jakob Studer, der in der Erzählung "Der alte Zauberer" erstmals auftritt. Das Kriminalroman-Genre regt ihn in der Folge zu einer ganzen Reihe von Geschichten an. lm Herbst 1933 erfährt seine Produktivität durch die Liebe zu Berthe Bendel zusätzlichen Auftrieb. Februar 1896 in Wien; gestorben 8. Dezember 1938 in Nervi bei Genua) war ein Schweizer Schriftsteller. Er gilt als einer der ersten deutschsprachigen Krimiautoren. Schriftsteller zu sein, hiess für Friedrich Glauser zunächst, Gedichte zu schreiben. In der lyrischen Form glaubte er, sein inneres Erleben ausdrücken zu können. Vorbilder waren für ihn Mallarmé und Trakl; der Ton entspricht dem expressionistischen Tenor der Zeit am Ende des Ersten Weltkrieges. Doch keiner dieser Texte wurde gedruckt. Für die Sammlung seiner Gedichte, die Glauser 1920 zusammenstellte, fand sich kein Verleger. Gedichte Glausers wurden erst postum veröffentlicht. In den letzten drei Lebensjahren schrieb Glauser fünf Kriminalromane, in deren Mittelpunkt Wachtmeister Studer steht, ein eigensinniger Kriminalpolizist mit Verständnis für die Gestrauchelten. Glausers Kriminalroman "Matto regiert" spielt in einer psychiatrischen Klinik und "man merkt ihm genauso wie den anderen Romanen an, dass der Autor eigene Erlebnisse verarbeitet hat. Mit eindringlichen Milieustudien und packenden Schilderungen der sozialpolitischen Situation gelingt es ihm, den Leser in seinen Bann zu schlagen."
