In collabora…tion with architect and urbanist Josep Bohigas and a network of researchers, institutions, and community leaders, Manifesta began an extensive pre-biennial research project to examine the relationship between churches and their surrounding neighbourhoods. Hundreds of sites were visited and mapped. Citizen consultations and expectation workshops invited residents to reflect on the kinds of shared spaces they and their communities need today. This publication presents the Urban Vision that emerged from this research. Rather than offering a fixed architectural blueprint, the 'vision' proposes a framework for rethinking churches as neighbourhood infrastructures for the twenty-first century. It explores how these buildings might once again become spaces for encounter, dialogue, and care while acknowledging their complex histories and sensitivities.

Mani…festa's founding director, Hedwig Fijen invited the architectural bureau MVRDV led by Winy Maas to develop an urban research of the city of Marseille. This new methodology, is a manner to decipher the complex settings of the cities that invite the biennial. In the study, multilayered structures of religion, ethnicity, geography, culture and politics are explored. Breaking away from its particular focus on art and culture, Manifesta has become an interdisciplinary and participatory program that aims to embrace holistic approaches that are uniting political, cultural and ecological questions within the host city.

Die diesjährige Ausgabe der nomadischen Biennale findet in gleich vier Städten im Ruhrgebiet statt: Duisburg, Essen, Gelsenkirchen und Bochum. Neben zeitgenössischer Kunst befasst sich die Manifesta mit Architektur, Bildung, Ökologie, sozialen Themen und der Gemeinschaft vor Ort. Jede Ausgabe greift drängende gesellschaftliche und politische Fragen Europas auf, ausgehend vom spezifischen Kontext der jeweiligen Gaststadt oder -region. Dabei werden lokale Herausforderungen mit überregionalen Anliegen verbunden. Vor diesem Hintergrund widmet sich die Manifesta 16 Ruhr der Frage der Umnutzung leerstehender oder entweihter Kirchengebäude - ein drängendes Problem nicht nur im Ruhrgebiet, sondern in ganz Europa. Ziel ist es, die insgesamt zwölf Kirchengebäude, die als Veranstaltungsorte dienen, in barrierefreie, nichtkommerzielle Orte umzuwandeln. Durch Kunst, Performance, Sound, aber auch Sport, Gemeinschaftsküchen oder architektonische Interventionen entstehen Räume und Momente, die weit in die umliegenden Stadtviertel hineinwirken und so die soziale Rolle der Gebäude über die Biennale hinaus prägen. Die Publikation stellt alle zwölf Veranstaltungsorte vor, dokumentiert die Interventionen und bettet die Orte und Projekte in ihren historischen, transformativen und urbanistischen Kontext ein.

Als das Ruhr…gebiet die Manifesta einlud, ihre sechzehnte Ausgabe zu gestalten, lag der Fokus nicht auf einem Ausstellungsthema, sondern auf einem gesellschaftlichen Wandel, der sich still und leise in ganz Deutschland und weiten Teilen Europas vollzieht: dem allmählichen Verschwinden von Kirchen als zentrale Institutionen des Quartierslebens. In Zusammenarbeit mit dem Architekten und Stadtplaner Josep Bohigas sowie einem Netzwerk aus Forscherinnen, Institutionen und Gemeindevertreterinnen startete die Manifesta im Vorfeld der Biennale ein umfangreiches Forschungsprojekt, um die Beziehung zwischen Kirchen und ihren umliegenden Quartieren zu untersuchen. Hunderte von Standorten wurden besucht und kartiert. Bürgerbefragungen und Erwartungsworkshops luden die Menschen aus den Quartieren dazu ein, darüber nachzudenken, welche Arten von sozialen oder öffentlichen Räumen sie und ihre Gemeinschaften heute benötigen. Die Publikation präsentiert die aus dieser Forschung hervorgegangene Urban Vision. Statt eines starren architektonischen Entwurfs, skizziert die 'Vision' einen Rahmen, um Kirchen als Quartiersinfrastrukturen für das 21. Jahrhundert neu zu denken. Dabei wird untersucht, wie diese Gebäude unter Berücksichtigung ihrer komplexen Geschichte und Besonderheiten wieder zu Orten der Begegnung, des Dialogs und der Fürsorge werden können. 144 pp. Englisch.
