Condition: Very Good. _____ Single sheet, 27 x 31.75", printed on one side and folded to 24ths for distribution._____ All the folds have been archivally reinforced on the blank verso._____ The map is in black ink, on cheap paper, now tanned and corner creased._____ . _____ The map is credited to Charles E. Barteau and shows sections numbered for selection._____ Many are Xed out with blue pencil, presumably having been sold._____ The town of Paisley is shown as are the Chewaucan River and various irrigation canals. _____ Undated, but includes a quote from Oregon Governor Oswald West who served from 1911 to 1915. _____ The Carey Act of 1894 was the last major piece of Federal land legislation of the 19th century._____ It proposed to grant each of ten western states up to one million acres of desert lands._____ The states were then to promote and supervise the irrigation, settlement and cultivation of them._____ Private companies would create irrigation systems then turn control of the the land over to operating companies._____ These companies would then market the improved lands to settlers. _____ The law stipulated that each settler was limited to tracts no larger than 160 acres._____ The land would be theirs only if they lived on it for ten years and converted 12% of it to irrigated agriculture. _____ The Portland Irrigation Company here begins the process of selling the land to the end users._____ The Paisley Project was located in Lake County in south central Oregon, 55 miles north of the California border._____ Each owner would be entitled to 2 acre-feet._____of water per irrigation season. _____ Not in WorldCat (01/23)._____.
