Engraved map, 24.3 x 39.5 cms; 26.9 x 44.2 cms (sheet), relief indicated with hachures, original folds, numbered in ink "27" in top corner (faded), minor edge-toning otherwise in very good condition. An uncommon Arrowsmith map of Central Asia "From Du Halde, D'Anville, Islenieff &c. &c. but Imperfect and inaccurate authorities", published before the Great Game. The map extends from the Caspian Sea in the west, to Manchura in the east; and from "Kolhyvan" (Western Siberia) in the north to Tibet in the South. It charts a region then largely mysterious to Western cartographers and a frontier for geopolitical ambitions: a caption north of the Kailash range reads "Unknown parts of Greater Tibet".

Map
No Binding. Condition: Very Good. Original chromo-lithographed map. Folded. 33x19 cm. Scale: 1/500000. A very good copy. An attractive chromo-lithographed map of Ottoman Africa covering Egypt, Benghazi, Eastern Tripoli, Tunisia, Algeria, East MEditerranean coasts, The Suez Canal and the Red Sea, taken from "Memâlîk-i Mahrûse-yi Sahâne?ye mahsûs mükemmel ve mufassal atlas" [i.e., Special complete and detailed Imperial atlas of the protected countries]. This atlas, a product of its time, was in use during the era of the 'Young Turks' as they steered the empire into WW1. It provides a detailed depiction of the Ottoman Empire's internal political landscape, illustrating the vilayet (provincial) boundaries established in the 1884 reforms -divisions that remained in effect through 1909. The map was drawn by Mehmed Esref, Mehmed Nasrullah and Mehmed Rüsdi. Mehmed Esref (1846-1912) was a distinguished Turkish-Ottoman military cartographer and educator at the Ottoman military academy, Mekteb-i Harbiye. Active in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, he played a pivotal role in shaping Ottoman cartography, producing numerous maps and atlases beyond this work.
