Limited Edition. Quarto. Limited to 500 copies of which this is #151 and signed by Marcks. 31(1) pp. illustrated. Laid in is an original woodcut of a wolf also signed by Marcks. He was one of the first teachers Gropius appointed at the Bauhaus School. He was classed as a "degenerate artist" by the Nazis but his work along with Kandinsky, Klee, Moholy-Nagy and others were displayed in a museum of bad art. Most of his work was destroyed when Berlin was bombed in 1943. He was commissioned after the war to create memorials for those who had died during the Third Reich. A fine copy bound in 3/4 vellum over beige paper covered boards lettered in dark brown, spine lettering brown, housed in publisher's slipcase. A fine copy printed on fine heavy paper.

Er genoss in den ersten Jahren die Anleitung von August Gaul und Georg Kolbe und gehörte zum Umfeld der Berliner Secession. Wichtige Inspiration für seine Werk war der französische Bildhauer Auguste Rodin. Er beschäftigte sich auch mit Porzellan; in den Schwarzburger Werkstätten für Porzellankunst Unterweißbach schuf er Tierplastiken. 1919 bis 1924 war er als Lehrer am Staatlichen Bauhaus in Weimar tätig. Ab 1920 leitete er die Bauhaus-Töpferei in Dornburg/Saale und arbeitete dort mit Otto Lindig zusammen. Durch seine Freundschaft mit Lyonel Feininger wurde er angeregt, sich auch mit dem Holzschnitt zu beschäftigen. Ab 1925 war er als Leiter der Bildhauerklasse an der Kunstschule Burg Giebichenstein in Halle, deren Rektorat er 1928 übernahm. 1933 wurde er von den Nationalsozialisten entlassen; er zog nach Niehagen (Ostsee), heute ein Ortsteil von Ahrenshoop. 1937 beschlagnahmten die Nationalsozialisten 86 seiner Arbeiten und diffamierten mehrere seiner Werke in der Ausstellung Entartete Kunst; 1945 erhielt er einen Ruf an die Landeskunstschule in Hamburg, und ab 1950 arbeitete er freischaffend. 1971 wurde das Gerhard-Marcks-Haus in Bremen eröffnet.
