Dawson. " W. R. Bett was Dr. Walter Reginald Bett (1903 - 1968). Physician, medical historian, author, orator, scholar, librarian and man of letters; he was the co-founder of the Osler Club of London. W. R. Dawson (1888- 1968); Warren Royal Dawson was an English librarian, Egyptologist and antiquarian. He was encouraged by Wallis Budge to pursue Egyptology , and became an expert on hieroglyphs and mummification. He wrote several esteemed books on Egyptology, among which were "Mummy as a Drug", and "Magician and Leech: a Study in the beginnings of medicine with special reference to ancient Egypt". It's a very interesting inscription, revealing a friendship between scholars who shared interests in history, medicine, literature ,and who had had an extended correspondence by mail. CONDITION -- VERY GOOD -- This is a previously owned book that remains clean and presentable, with the following particulars noted : EXTERIOR -- The spine displays some abrasion and loss of surface color - at the head the loss is more clearly discernible ' spine extremities are compressed and display abrasion, with fraying just starting; gilt lettering still fairly bright; front board is clean with but mild rub; rear board is clean , but has slightly more rub; rear board edges display a few small dents; text-block edges are toned, else clean. BINDING -- Paper over end-paper hinges are not split; hinges are cracked between pp 112 and 113, else binding is still solid with no loose or detached leaves. INTERIOR : Interesting Gift Inscription on front paste-down (see below). End-papers toned, and displaying slight smudging; small book number label affixed to bottom fore-edge corner of front paste-down; text paper is toned and displays foxing ; else the interior is clean and free of marking.

Condition: Good. - Octavo, softcover bound in printed cream & vermilion wrappers. The wraps are bumped & lightly chipped with the tail of the spine torn. Good Quadrant is an Australian literary and cultural journal publishing poetry and short stories and essays on politics, history, universities and the arts. The journal was founded in 1956 by Richard Krygier, a Polish-Jewish refugee who had been a social-democratic activist in Europe and by James McCauley, a Catholic poet. The publication was a project of the Australian Committee for Cultural Freedom, the Australian branch of the Congress for Cultural Freedom, an anti-Communist advocacy group funded by the CIA.Among the contents of this first issue of Quadrant are the articles "James Cook, Seaman" by Alan Villiers, "Walter de la Mare" by Rosemary Dobson, "Good Manners in Street Architecture" by George Molnar and "The Communist Conspiracy in Asia" by Denis Warner.
