Walter de la Mare's retelling of "The Turnip," originally a tale from the brothers Grimm, is not only an improvement over the original, but a real work of art in its own right. Here are two brothers: one greedy and duplicitous, the other selfless, compassionate, and poor. Their fates are forever altered by a giant turnip that springs from the good brother's field not long after the appearance of a mysterious, squint-eyed old man. It is no accident that the turnip, the lowliest of all the root crops, provides the moral core for this essentially cautionary tale about the triumph of a humble vegetable over a priceless ruby. Gorgeous, lush color illustrations with clever detailing and borders. The turnip -- huge, surreal, and wonderfully alive -- is depicted masterfully. Condition: Fine in like jacket.
