Elle est illustrée de deux vignettes in-texte pour « Le Louc et l'ignâ » (répétée sur la 4e de couverture) et « La Cigale et l'feurmit ». Cette dernière est particulière car en fait de cigale, c'est bien un criquet qui est représenté. L'erreur fût corrigée dans la 4e et dernière édition qui ajouta par ailleurs deux autres gravures pour « L'Ajace embobelinée dan dés piume de pahon ». La Bibliographie de la France l'annonce dans son bulletin du 5 février 1859 et l'attribue par erreur à Vallery-Radot, bibliothécaire du Louvre, dédicataire de l'oeuvre. Revue et augmentée, elle contient 18 pièces dont 12 nouvelles ainsi qu'un vocabulaire (pp. 56 à 70) dont plusieurs sont des traductions ou adaptations libres des fables de la Fontaine. La deuxième, Noveau fabeulier jarnacoès, qu'at été compousé lindi venant à hier peur l'ebaudissement d'ine Saintongeoèse in p'tit feugnon, chez les mêmes en 1852 contient 6 fables en 35 pages. Celle qui porte au titre la mention de « troisième édition, revue et augmentée » en est en fait la quatrième et dernière. Annoncée comme « imprimée sur papier de couleur et ornée de gravures sur bois » chez les mêmes en 1859 (annonce du 20 aout, JGIL, 48e année, 2e série, n°34) elle s'intitule Recueil de fables et contes en patois saintongeais et présente pour la première fois la traduction française en regard et 3 nouvelles pièces qui en portent le total à 21 en 128 pages. Elle supprime par contre le vocabulaire. Toutes ces éditions présentent une évolution du texte avec des variantes significatives. Jean-Henri Burgeaud des Marets, docteur en droit, linguiste, poète et écrivain, premier traducteur de Mickiewicz, précurseur du régionalisme, ami du prince-philologue L.-L. Bonaparte, avait aussi réuni une bibliothèque patoisante de la plus grande importance.
