Paperback. Condition: Fair. Marshall Hall was a spectular figure in many of the most famous murder trials staged at the Old Bailey. His powers of oratory and cross-examination made him a widely-sought advocate, and he played a leading role in such celebrated cases as those of Seddon the prisoner, George Joseph Smith (who drowned his brides in a bath), the "Green Bicycle" mystery and the Field and Gray murder on Eastbourne beach. His dynamic style of defence secured several prisoners the benefit of the doubt in a jury's mind, but is also involved him in many clashes with judges who did not care for Marshall Hall's cut-and-thrust manner in court. This book is written by a friend and colleague who had access to Sir Edward Marshall Hall's private papers. Part biography, it reveals the barrister's tragic personal life and the contradictions in his personality. Part case history, it gives plenty of details about the murder cases. A readable copy of the book which may include some defects such as highlighting and notes. Cover and pages may be creased and show discolouration. …

Book is tight, square, and unmarked. Book is tight, square, and unmarked. Book Condition: Good +; suntoning to spine and peripheral edges of boards; glue toning to endpapers. Green cloth boards and spine with bright black lettering on the spine. Clean internals. Inner hinges are sound and not split. 471 pp 8vo. This is a good book, and decidedly encouraging to the law student, for it depicts the successful career of a man who, -in the words of his biographer, "was never very much of a lawyer," but was nevertheless the outstanding British criminal barrister for almost forty years. Though his knowledge of the law might have appeared shallow, he garnered an amazing list of victories, due almost entirely to his keenness in analyzing the emotional values in the case; in dramatizing the evidence presented, and in reasoning with, and not at, the jurors. Legal methods in England are depicted, struggles attending a beginner's start in practice are traced, the power of newspapers in trying cases and in formulating public opinion prior to the trial is shown, and thoughts dominating presiding judges are often made clear. A clean very presentable copy.…

paperback. Condition: Good. Our good condition books are generally good for reading but not for gifting or collecting. They could have imperfections such as creasing, fanning, inscriptions, margin notes, yellowing, staining on edge or cover or pages, bumps, scuffs, etc etc (sometimes multiple of these). It's a wide category that encompasses anything that isn't almost-new down to anything that is slightly better than poor. We would NOT recommend gifting Good books - these should be considered reading copies. Our books are dispatched from a Yorkshire former cotton mill. We list via barcode/ISBN so please note that the images are stock images and may not be the exact copy you receive, furthermore the details about edition and year might not be accurate as many publishers reuse the same ISBN for multiple editions and as we simply scan a barcode or enter an ISBN we do not check the validity of the edition data when listing. If you're looking for an exact edition please don't order (at least not without checking with us first, although we don't always have time to check). We aim to dispatch prompty, the service used will depend on order value and book size. We can ship to most countries, see our shipping policies. Payment is via Abe only.…
