None of us is ignorant of what the Greek Muses and Sirens were, and the very fact that the image conveyed by these names has never been as clear-cut in the case of the latter as in that of the former, seems to be an inheritance from the past. Lobeck erklaerte doch, dass die » seamy-side » der griechischen Religion bis Homer unentwickelt geblieben sei und die fröhlichen Menschen bis in die Zeiten der Perserkriege « superstitionis causas procul habebant », da diese superstitiones angeblich nur mit der Entwicklung der Intelligenz und der Selbserkenntnis sich melden konnten. Darum wird man die Entstehungsfrage eben dieser Erscheinungsform, des daktylischen Hexameters, als eine vielleicht wichtigste Handhabe zum Entziffern unseres Rätsels «Homeros» überprüfen, und von dieser Überprüfung auch gewisse gute Erfolge hoffen dürfen, welche Erfolge bisher offenbar nur durch die Ungelöstheit und Unlösbarkeit mancher allgemein-metrischer Fragen, und damit im Zusammenhang durch die dunkle Vergangenheit des griechischen Hexameters retardiert wurden. Als ich zum ersten Male das Problem des sog. hexameter heroicus dactylicus ins Auge fasste, war meine Stellungnahme eher noch negativ. Bien que marqué par l'héritage médiéval, Clément Marot est un des premiers poètes français modernes. Précurseur de la Pléiade, il est le poète officiel de la cour de François Ier. Malgré la protection de Marguerite de Navarre, sur du roi de France François Ier, ses sympathies marquées pour la Réforme et pour Martin Luther lui valent cependant la prison, puis l'exil en Suisse et en Italie.

He left France after the revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685. In Holland he became the architect of King-Stadtholder Prince Willem III of Oranje (1650-1702), whom he followed to London.
