Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. [1st ed., 1st printing] ; 224 pp. ; 20 cm OCLC 2858801 The Airplane Boys series by E. J. Crane was originally published in the 1930s. The unifying thread connecting all stories is the presence of members of a South American race, who have developed advanced technical devices that allow for super- human communication and movement. This is the 8th and last volume in a series that started out as The Sky Buddies, with the author using a pseudonym, M. Delmore Marquith ; The Airplane Boys are 16-year old Jim Austin and his half-brother, Bob Caldwell. Jim's family owns a ranch on Cap Rock River in Texas. The boys develop an on-going relationship with a mysterious dark-skinned man interested in science. Through this character, Don Huarea, his inventions add a science fiction element. The Airplane Boys struggle through the devastation in the 1931 hurricane that ravaged British Honduras. They fly to the city of Tela to report the damage in the capital, Belize. But the boys are pursued by Gordon and his gang and are captured. But all ends well when "those who seek to do ill to others only bring ill to themselves". ; E. J. Craine was born in Cleveland, Ohio and lived in Montana then moved to New York City working as a bookeeper in Queens. She joined the Red Cross during WWI, and later became involved in SPCC (Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Children). After the war she became the publicity director for the Eagle Radio Corporation, where she distributed coupons and gift certificates dropped from a plane. she began to publish stories in American Boy, American Girl and St. Nicholas magazines, and was the author of several juvenile fiction books. ; Contents: Last day in Belize -- The Pan American Airways -- Devastation -- In the air again -- Mustard gas -- The investigation -- An ancient secret -- Native poisonThe winners - Smashing tides ; top edge and spine slightly sunned, and foxing present, else FINE.
