Mars and Squire met at the Cincinnati Art Academy in Ohio and would remain partners in work and life, moving from Ohio to NYC to France and Provincetown MA and eventually back to France where they both died in the mid-1950s. While living in France they became friends with Gertrude Stein and were part of her salon.
