Paperback. Condition: New. The artist's book as activist tactic: a toolkitFreedom of the Presses is at once a textbook and a toolbox for using artists' books and creative publications to further community engagement and social justice projects. Far from being a staid survey of an art historical practice, Freedom of the Presses i…ntervenes in an ongoing discussion about art and activism in the present day by considering the place of the art book in the 21st century. The publisher, Booklyn, has been involved in this conversation since 1999, when a group of six artists decided to band together to promote contemporary artists' books and publications. Booklyn's focus has always been voracious, encompassing street art, punk and activist culture alongside more conventional artists' books. This restless energy is present in Freedom of the Presses, which brings together a provocative mix of humorous, intimate and scholarly writing in order to expand how we think about the concept, content, design, production and distribution of artists' and activists' publications today. Aimed at a global community of librarians, publishers and readers, it offers models of how to reimagine contemporary artists' bookmaking as a socially engaged, political practice. With essays by Kurt Allerslev, Tia Blassingame, Sarah Kirk Hanley, FLY-O, Karen Eliot, Richard J. Lee, Florencia San Martín, Ganzeer, Suzy Taraba, Stephen Dupont, Bridget Elmer, Janelle Rebel, Marshall Weber, Anton Wurth, Xu Bing, Deborah Ultan and Aaron Sinift, Freedom of the Presses enacts the dialogue it calls for, inviting artists and activists to weigh in on the place of artists' books in the most pressing social, political and cultural issues of our time.

First Edition. Fine cloth copy in an equally fine dw, now mylar-sleeved. Particularly and surprisingly well-preserved; tight, bright, clean and especially sharp-cornered.; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 183 pages; Description: 183 p. : ill. (some col.), col. maps ; 32 cm. Colored maps of Tibet on lining papers. Subjects: Tibet (China) --Poli…tics and government --1951- --Pictorial works. Summary: Through a diverse selection of photographs, personal interviews, and historical information, Tibet Since 1950: Silence, Prison, or Exile, a collaboration between Aperture and Human Rights Watch, looks beyond the Shangri-la image of Tibet to the impact of political repression by the Chinese government on Tibetan lives. The Tibet Autonomous Region as well as the area known as "eastern Tibet," has been shaped by fifty years of direct Chinese government control. The impact of that control is evident in Tibetan culture, politics, economic activity, and religious practice. It is manifest in the extensive prison network used to detain those perceived as challenging Chinese rule and in the extreme measures used to keep protests in check. This publication contains rare photographs of Chinese government crackdowns on Tibetan demonstrations and riveting first-hand accounts from Tibetans living in exile. It examines the physical damange inflicted upon Tibetan religious institutions in the past and the more subtle destruction still going on today. Tibet Since 1950 offers a new perspective on the complicated subject of recent Tibetan history, avoiding the standard cliches of Tibet as a land defined by the search for spiritual enlightenment and as an exotic paradise. The real Tibet is far more complex. This book examines the bleak banality of repressive control that is as much a part of Tibet as is its scenic beauty. The richly varied photographs are accompanied by an introduction by Tibet expert Elliot Sperling accounts by Mickey Spiegel of Human Rights Watch with Tibetans who were detained in prison and are now living in exile a discussion of Tibetan prisons by Steven Marshall and a consideration of Tibet, myth and reality, by Orville Schell. Photographers include: Jeffrey Aaronson, John Ackerly, Diane Barker, Kevin Bubriski, Kathryn Culley, Ian Cumming, Carl de Keyzer, Raphaele Demandre, Guy Dinmore, Stuart Franklin, Richard Gere, Alberto Giuliani, Catherine Henriette, Lynn Johnson, Russell Johnson, Steven Marshall, Marcos Prado, Matthieu Ricard, Galen Rowell, Michael Springer, and Franz Stich. 3 Kg.
