Hardback. Condition: New. An in-depth exploration into the immense popularity of William-Adolphe Bouguereau's work in America throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries Seeking to bring Gallic sophistication and worldly elegance into their galleries and drawing rooms, wealthy Americans of the late 19th and early 20th cent…uries collected the work of William-Adolphe Bouguereau (1825-1905) in record numbers. This fascinating volume offers an in-depth exploration of Bouguereau's overwhelming popularity in turn-of-the-century America and the ways that his work-widely known from reviews, exhibitions, and inexpensive reproductions-resonated with the American public. While also lauded by the French artistic establishment and a dominant presence at the Parisian Salons, Bouguereau achieved his greatest success selling his idealized and polished paintings to a voracious American market. In this book, the authors discuss how the artist's sensual classical maidens, Raphaelesque Madonnas, and pristine peasant children embodied the tastes of American Gilded Age patrons, and how Bouguereau's canvases persuasively functioned as freshly painted Old Masters for collectors flush with new money.Published in association with the Milwaukee Art Museum and the Memphis Brooks Museum of ArtExhibition Schedule:Milwaukee Art Museum (02/15/19-05/12/19)Memphis Brooks Museum of Art (06/22/19-09/22/19)San Diego Museum of Art (11/09/19-03/15/20).

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Privately Printed, Published [No date: circa 2010]. Hardcover, 94 pp.; 26 cm; illustrated with black-and-white and color family photographs throughout. In very good condition with a very good dust jacket. Black cloth-covered boards, no lettering on front or spine…, minimal shelf wear, binding tight. Pages clean and unmarked. Black dust jacket with inset black-and-white photograph of the Soledad garden gate shows light bumping to edges and mild shelf wear. Now in an archival quality (removable) Brodart cover. Privately printed family memoir of the last American years at Soledad, the E. Atkins and Co. sugar estate near Cienfuegos, Cuba. Narrated by Katharine "Kitty" Claflin Weeks, granddaughter of Boston sugar merchant Edwin F. Atkins (author of Sixty Years in Cuba), with her husband John Wingate Weeks II (1920-2013), son of Eisenhower Commerce Secretary Sinclair Weeks and grandson of Senator John W. Weeks, Secretary of War under Harding and Coolidge. John Weeks left the First National Bank of Boston in 1948 to manage his wife's family sugar and cattle operation and ran Soledad until the estate was expropriated by Castro's government in 1960. Compiled by the couple and their daughters from family letters and recollections, with chapters on the plantation's history from the Sarria family forward, everyday life, schooling, visitors, and the Revolution and departure. Soledad was also the site of Harvard's Atkins botanical garden, and the family's claim against the Cuban government was filed with the Foreign Claims Settlement Commission. Apparently unrecorded: no WorldCat (OCLC) holdings located.
