AIle, ob Gegner oder Befürworter, wissen, dass psychotrope Medikamente familiäre Konflikte oder soziale Krisen nicht lösen konnen. Auch "antidepressiv" oder "antipsychotisch" wirksame Psychopharmaka können Depressionen oder Psychosen nicht beseitigen. Die Frage, ob überhaupt kausal wirksame Sub- stanzen dafür zur Verfügung stehen, ist umstritten; manches spricht dagegen, einiges dafür. Das weit verbreitete Vorurteil, dass man Kindem mit psychischen Störungen keine Psychopharmaka geben sollte, läßt sich nicht aufrecht erhalten. AIlerdings sollte man Kinder niemals unnötig und ungezielt medikamentos behandeln. Die Psychopharmakotherapie stellt bereits seit einer Reihe von Jahren eine erfolgreiche Behandlungsmethode für eine Reihe von psychischen Störungen und Erkrankungen auch des Kindes- und Jugendalters dar. Psychopharmaka sind eine Realität. Ihre Existenz wird nicht nur beklagt. Sie wird bekämpft. AIlerdings ohne Aussicht auf ihre Abschaffung. Einfach deshalb, weil sie entscheidend mit dazu beitrugen, dass aus Irrenanstalten Krankenhäuser wurden und psychotische Kinder und Jugendliche, die früher als "schwererziehbar" eingestuft und langfristig in Heime und Anstalten eingewiesen wurden, heute nach relativ kurzen Klinikaufenthalten gebessert nach Hause entlassen werden können. Die medikamentöse Behandlung psychisch gestörter Kinder und Jugendlicher scheint einfach zu sein, weil anscheinend nur "Zielsymptome" richtig erkannt und das entsprechende Medikament richtig ausgewählt werden muss, urn zu einem therapeutischen Erfolg zu führen.
