Signed
A 16TH CENTURY FORGED PRINT? If genuine, the present engraving would literally re-write the history of the field; unfortunately, it was most likely dreamed up by an enterprising 16th or 17th century artist. Engraving, 25,7 x 16 cm (trimmed to borders); incorporating engraved inscriptions Finiguerra Fecit 1457 in the archway and M. F. 1457 in the lower right corner. Engraving pasted onto a slightly larger sheet of laid paper; the whole mounted within manuscript borders on a sheet of thick, 19th century laid, unwatermarked paper. Tiny section of lower left corner of engraving supplied in crude manuscript, evidently at the time of mounting. Manuscript inscription in archway, in a late 18th or early 19th century hand: "Stampa de primi Tempi, asi dice possa essere di Maso che in Firenze ne fù l inventore / Baldinucci, e Vasari, e altri"; notation in the lower corner of mounting sheet in a 19th century hand ( no. 62035 ). Provenance: Romantic Agony, November 2017, Lot 172 ($1,800). Unrecorded, striking attempt at a print forgery probably executed in the 16th or 17th century. The plate purports to bear the signature of Maso Finiguerra (1426-1464), believed at the time to have been responsible for the invention of metal plate engraving; if true, the present item would be the only surviving example of a print signed with his name. To dispel any doubts, the 15th century engraver not only signs his initials in the lower corner, but adds his full name to the middle of the design, above the shepherds. The attribution seems to have been entertained by the 18th or 19th century annotator to the extent that he was willing to deface the print in any case who repeats the legend of Finiguerra as inventore, and cites Vasari as well as Filippo Baldinucci (1625-1696) to back up the claim. Thanks to this enduring myth, Finiguerra a Florentine goldsmith by profession - remained a critical figure in the history of old master prints until the late 19th century, presumably spurring the creation of the present jeu d esprit (or cold-hearted forgery?).
